Mediacenter to show my Final Cut projects to clients
Posted by Fabrizio Rinaldi on February 28, 2010 at 7:41 pmHi, I work with Final Cut and I often need to show my projects in private projections.
Instead of burning the videofiles on multiple dvds or blue-rays (after hours of video conversion) and carry then with me I’d like to buy a MediaCenter/External HardDrive that I can carry with me and just connect to the projectors or HD screen to show my stuff in FullHD to clients and other people.
I already know some good media player that read H.264, but I’d really love a media player that reads Apple ProRes, Uncompressed 10 bit etc. Maybe I’m just dreaming.
Thanks for the help and sorry for my bad English,

February 28, 2010 at 7:47 pmAJA KiPro is essentially a ProRes hard drive based VTR that has a multitude of output connections from HDMi to composite.
If that’s too much, then I’d go with an AppleTV, but it only goes up to 720p30.

The biggest problem is that you wont always know what type of connections the projector or display will have. For example if their projector is not an HD projector then it will not have HDMI.
There is NOT going to be a out of the box media center that will support pro res or uncompressed. uncompressed HD you cant even play off a single hard drive as one drive alone is not fast enough, you need a raid.
The AppleTV is great and easy to use, but is limited on connections. You may want to consider getting a Mac Mini or MacBook that you can take around, or even a iPad. That way if they people you want to show the video to do not have a projector or screen handy you can show them on the MacBook or iPad screen.

In fact I really think that a Mac Mini can do the job. 🙂

February 28, 2010 at 11:10 pmI’ve never used this, but made a note of it in case I ever needed a player like it. It’s similar to AppleTV. Check it out.

March 1, 2010 at 4:27 amI use a Mac Mini for just this purpose. Just be sure to get the current higher-end model with as much RAM as you can fit in. It will playback ProResHQ from an external FW800 drive (non-raid). You can also playback from the internal HD if you want to keep it more portable.
I’ve never had any problems, even using both display ports.. Also buy the Mini Display port > HDMI or DVI adapter so you can use it on devices with that interface.

March 1, 2010 at 7:40 amYou should be aware that the current model of Mac Mini will NOT let you use a Mini DVI to sVideo/RCA adapter with it, you can ONLY use it with MIni DVI or Mini Display adapters that do to VGA, DVI, or HDMI. And audio also runs separate fout of the headphone jack.
This is about the 09 Mac Mini but the same is true for the ones being sold today.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1928699&tstart=15So if you are ever going to need to connect via sVideo or RCA, the Mac Mini will NOT work.
