Our experience is similar to Will’s – no problems with the Macs, a couple of problems with FW drives. It’s possible the problem is related to the quality of the supplied a/c power.

Here’s how I’ve done it. It works very well. Import the file to Compressor. Use an H.264 preset and change it to:

Dropped frames are almost always caused by too slow drives. I have no experience with Drobo drives, but I’ve read a couple of times here on the Cow that they are NG for video editing. Try running the AJA System Test on the drives and see what their speed actually is. I believe you can download it for free if you don’t have an AJA card in your Mac.

I often shoot 720 24pN and edit in a 23.98 (23.976 actually) sequence. When exporting a file to be converted for web use, I Export QT at Current Settings, either a self-contained or ref video. Do not use QT Conversion! I then use that file in Squeeze, BitVice or Compressor depending on the final use.

Use an external program like Soundftrack Pro or QT Pro to convert the mp3 to aiff (PCM 48kHz 16/24 bit). FCP doesn’t like mp3s.

I agree with Robb. You can use Compressor to convert and make sure you enable Frame Controls. Choose the Best quality settings for re-sizing and if the frame rate has to be converted choose Best for that, too. While I’ve never used it, ClipWrap might also help.
