    Hi there,

i’ve shot just a film on 8 rolls of fuji 250d, and the word from the lab is that it all looks great but one of the rolls is suffering from edge fogging. My DP described it is an orange band running down the side of the frame, and causing the image to go a little milky. Milky doesn’t seem too problematic as i can just put more contrast in the picture, but i’m concerned about the orange band.

Here’s an example of what it looks like – although i hope to god it’s not quite as bad as this:

I’ve gotten a HD transfer so i’m thinking this might give me a little scope for zooming in or cropping, but how much quality do I lose doing this? and at what point do you start to notice a difference? can anyone think of ways to get around the problem? luckily this is a music video and not a drama, so i have more creative leeway.

    Cheers guys:)

I had the idea of using effects just the ones in this link below to make it look intentional. Its all the usual film scratching stuff, but it’s done quite effectively in this video and it doesn’t look too gratuitous or cheap, and yet there’s lots of it. Obviously, it will look even better because of the fact it was shot on film.

    Anyhow, have a look:

does anyone know where and how i can get my hands on these effects? is it a plug in? The film plug in on fcp is nowhere near as good as this, unless i’m just doing something wrong.

    Cheers guys, jack 🙂

Artbeats has this kind of footage. Shane Ross did a tutorial about using Film Effects.

There are a number of ‘old film’ and ‘aged film’ type plugins. Film Damage from Delirium is pretty good for scratches. Do a search at toolfarm.com and download some demos.

BTW, if the fogging is only at the outer edge, you might just be able to blow up the frame a few percent to get rid of it.
