Was the SD show made from down-converted HD clips? Are those the same HD clips you’re referring to? If so, you might be able to copy your sequence to a HD sequence and reconnect to the HD clips. You might have to remove attributes from the clips in the HD seq. I’ve never done this. Rafael & Michael might have better information than I.

Checkout Automatic Sync Technologies. They will transcribe and provide timed caption files in a variety of formats for around $200 per program hour. We just used them to make subtitles for a series of Flash movies for eBay. The Flash swf hooks up with an xml containing the captions and timing data which is one of the formats they provide. I haven’t used it for video captions, but it’s one of the formats they offer. With that kind of pricing for a 3-day turnaround, I’m sure I couldn’t do it myself less expensively.

Do you have Sorenson Squeeze or Adobe Media Encoder? If so, export a self-contained QT file from FCP using Current Settings (not using QT Conversion). Use that file in Squeeze or Media Encoder. Do use the On2VP6 codec and choose a data rate between 500 and 1000kbps. The higher the better the quality. However, unless viewers have robust connections they may have problems with 1000kbps. Set your audio bit rate to 96kbps stereo for decent audio. If it’s mono, 48kbps will do. Set the video to bring the total bit rate to where you want it.

You can also do this with Compressor. Using the same exported file in Compressor, make an H.264 file with similar settings above. Of course, you don’t use VP6 as you’re using H.264. After the file is encoded change the .mov extension to .flv and you’re set.

I always export a self-contained QT (not QT Conversion) with Current Settings. Then I use Compressor to make the h.264 from that file. It’s fast if you have QMaster setup to use multiple cores.
