Subtitle software compatible with FCP 6
Posted by Audrey Villiard on May 28, 2010 at 5:12 pmHi,
I need to add subtitles to a FCP project. I don’t want to use the title tool of FCP.
The project is a feature documentary and I would like to do the subtitling in another software so that when I will import them in FCP, I will just have to add a video track.
So I am searching for a program in wich I can import a video, in wich I can choose a font, in wich I can type my subtitles according to a Timecode and from which I can export a video track to FCP.
And on top of this, I would like this program to be free.Any suggestion ?
Thanks,Audrey Villiard replied 15 years, 11 months ago 5 Members · 5 Replies -

May 28, 2010 at 10:41 pmFree – I’ve never seen one. There’s a very reasonable captioning service from Automatic Sync Technologies. Check it out.

I’m glad I was sitting down when I read this. If I was standing up, I would have fainted. Our company does a wide array of captioning and subtitling. FREE subtitling software? Do you know that there are thousands of companies whose only services are subtitling and captioning? Did you expect that Final Cut Pro and the Mac to run it on would be free too?
How do people these days expect to do high end work without making the investments for the high end tools to produce the high end results?
Free? I see days of FCP’s text tool in your future.Chad Brewer

May 29, 2010 at 11:25 amWell, it can be free.
Use my subtitler:
https://www.videotoolshed.com/?page=products&pID=12It does exactly what you described (and way more…)
The free demo allows you to save / export 8 titles.
If you have more time than money, you can easilly save 8 titles a go, and in the end you’ll get there.
Now keep in mind that an average doc has about 600 titles an hour.
So a feature doc has about 1500 of them.Don’t know if you have to translate as well, but even if it’s the same language, and you’re not an experienced subtitler, this will take you a couple of days, and that is,
IF YOU KNOW YOUR TOOLS AND HAVE GOOD LANGUAGE SKILLS.I’m not sure what your rate is, but this is a tool that saves at least 50% of the time to create good looking titles, so it will pay for itself on this one job alone.
But besides the tool, i’m afraid you underestimate the job itself.
Text and timing, and knowing about read speed of humans, and how to be creative with words to fit everything in is an art by itself.I would suggest, outsource it, or take a week or two off to learn the tricks of the trade.

May 30, 2010 at 6:53 pmHello Audrey,
I do not know Bouke’s subtitling tool so I will mention two other leads: one that is apparently free, the other not.
If you are ready to go through the learning process of XML and SPEND time learning that, go here: https://www.michaelcinquin.com/tools/subtitles
Not sure how productive you can be with this but worth a try.
If you are ready to INVEST money into subtitling, I would suggest you use this: https://www.zeitanker.com/content/tools/zeitanker_tools/zeitanker_annotation_edit/
We’re using Annotation Edit on a regular basis and it works, and has a very good support also.
Again, I would consider this as an investment because the next time around, whatever your choice, you will use the skills you learnt.
Hope this helps
Patrice
