I seem to remember something weird happening when I tried to install RX on the same computer as FCP. It was a while ago. I think the problem was caused by installing the audio units plugin. FCP will try to use that during it’s startup and doesn’t like it. Try just installing the standalone version and see if that helps. In the end I installed RX on our Pro Tools machine.

Nice work. Ty. This is very helpful to know. And Wave Agent is a free download I believe.

If you haven’t already, trash FCP prefs and repair permissions. I’ve never run across that issue myself.

After conversion to ProRes, when you drag the first file onto the Timeline, FCP should ask if you want it to set the timeline settings to match your clip. Answer yes. Workflows for YouTube, Vimeo, etc. have been discussed many times. Same for DVDs. Search and you’ll find your answers. Also check the FCP FAQ which also has a lot of info. You can always output SD from HD. Search for that, too. It’s all there.

When I have to do this I simply select the entire V2 track and drag it to V3. Then I do the same to V1 and drag it to V2; then V3 down to V1. It’s a bit clumsy, but it works. I usually mark an in point in case I drag the track to the side by mistake so I can properly align the tracks.

If you are editing H.264 clips in FCP, that’s probably the cause of your problems. FCP doesn’t like H.264 for editing. You should only use codecs you find in the Easy Setups. Use Compressor or MPEG Streamclip to convert the H.264 to ProRes and edit with that.

  • I think you’re alluding to reversing the phase of one channel to achieve cancellation (by mixing them) in the other. It’s worth a try, but I don’t think it will work. The cancellation only happens when the two signals are the same. In your case you have two mics recording signals that are not exactly in phase with each other.

And if you also need to produce DVDs, the workflow outlined by Michael works fine. And the added benefit is you can place more footage on a DVD because the frame rate is 23.976. When encoding, Compressor and other encoders place flags in the encoded files that tell DVD players to add pulldown when the clips are played.

I’ve not, but an associate uses GoToMyPC and he’s able to control his Avid remotely, even from his Windows Mobile phone. But he can’t monitor audio that way.
