January 7, 2011 at 3:39 pm in reply to: How do I make animated text like this?

The technique is often referred to as “Kinetic typography”. Very popular style right now. Very doable in AE, I”ve done at least 5 or 6 of these videos in the last year(client sees one on YouTube then asks us to do it…whoohoo).

Generally a good understanding of precomping, parenting, nulls, text presets, text animators and sometimes 3d cameras and lights are needed to accomplish this type of look.

That and a whole lot of time, I’ve been using AE for 10 years, and my last Kinetic type video, (about 2 minutes long) took around 25 hours of work.

Quick google search turned up this tutorial: https://vimeo.com/1271357

    Have fun and good luck.

Make 2 compositions(say 2000×1000) of your text. In the first make large text filling the comp, the second comp will be the smaller text. Now create your final comp and bring both texts into it. Larger text goes on top of the layer stack. Add CC Spere to the effect and set up your radius, rotation…and most importantly set the Render to “Outside”. Now copy the effect and drop in on the smaller text but set the render to “Inside”.

Adjust the lights for the two layers to taste, lowering the intensity of the smaller layers and you should be there.

Wow, people will find a reason to complain about anything…

Well, I’ll just go ahead and finish my design anyway, upload it and if you like it, feel free to use it. I’ve gotten way more than 5000 dollars worth of value from your site.

    Happy New Year Cow!

Make sure live update isn’t clicked off. It’s the third button above your sources.

December 27, 2010 at 2:15 pm in reply to: shadow on green screen (keying, masking, roto-ing in AE)

If you are going to mask, why not roto out the shadow. Create a mask around the shadow and change the mask mode to subtract. Then when the actors converge, just move the mask off screen.

You should still be working in a WS composition. I don’t know why AE interpets QT’s that come from avid as .91, but right click on the footage, choose “interpret footage” and make it 1.21. Either drag it to the create new comp button, or when creating a new composition choose NTSC D1 Widescreen.
