I don’t know how you turned it off(I don’t know of a keyboard shortcut that toggles the camera wire frame). There is a fly out for the comp window in the upper right corner., click it and open up the view options and Turn Camera Wireframes from off to on.

Trapcode Stroke is the right path. Create a solid and make a smooth curvy mask. Apply stroke. In my example project I made the thickness 1.8, Feather 100, Enabled “Taper” and under the “Advanced” tab turned down the internal opacity to 40%.

The real magic occurs in the repeater tab. I turned up my instances to 8, play with the X & Y rotation and Z displacement for the initial look. Then start playing “Scale” and “Factor” and you should have something very similar.

    Here’s the project I created: 4782_wavystrokelines.aep.zip

Hope that gets you on the right path(no pun intended)

  • As you probably have learned, AE really isn’t the program you want to use to create audio effects. If you don’t have Audition(which has a pre-built telephone eq), you could download Soundforge’s Audacity and then follow this tutorial for creating telephone-like audio.

Sorry, been awhile since I opened up particular and I’d forgotten this, but if you can tie the lights to the layer as it twists(not sure how you built the 3d text), you can actually shape the light to be an edge…ie. x = 50, y = 1, z = 1. Then your smoke/sparks will look like it’s coming from an edge.

Do you have access to or can you get Trapcode Particular? It’s a 3D particle system, respects AE’s 3d space. If you can there are some spark presets which would be a starting place.

Particular can use layers as emitters, so I would copy your flying text and create a version that was essentially just the outer edge of it. Then try to use that as my emitter. Also if you created the text in C4D it would be easy to tie a null to the text and export the data (AEC) to After Effects. Then in AE create lights(they can be used as emitters in particular) and have the sparks & smoke be generated from those emitters.

Red Giant allows you to use Particular as trial(watermarked), so there is no harm in downloading it and giving it a try.

I don’t know of any way to have Particular emit from one point and then follow a different light. Check out this Tutorial where he uses wind to give direction to the particles.

Check out this tutorial at Blue Print Reveal from Video CoPilot. Using curves and a texture he really roughens up the edge, but it won’t flow like paint.

Also there is the Stylize > Roughen Edges effect that might help you out also.

Think that’s about it for resources tutorials, so good luck, and have fun with it.
