Another vote for being well rounded.
My path was, I went to an art high school and afterward worked in photo labs, did typesetting and data processing. After being laid off 15 years ago at the age of 30, I happened to apply for a position as a Master Control operator for public access part-time. I had no knowledge of TV whatsoever. I worked there for 5 years doing the occasional wedding video on the side. That opened up an opportunity to be a camera op for the (early!) morning news. Then I did some freelance as a video assist for P&G film shoots. Eventually, I was able to land a position as an edit assist.
Being an edit assist and then assistant editor was pretty much like an apprenticeship for me where I could see how the pros go about the process of working with clients, managing projects and editing high quality pieces. I’m now director of production and senior editor for a widely seen television program.
I only got a year and a half of college, and in fact never seemed to conform well to the whole school scene. But I haven’t stopped learning and my university now is my extensive collection of industry and miscellaneous magazines which I devour every month. Staying abreast of technical innovations has been critical for my position as techical guru. I even pick up the occasional Vogue, Cosmo and other women’s magazines to stay abreast of fashion, women’s concerns, color palettes, etc. because sometimes you have to produce content from that point of view. For my youth oriented show, I have to stay current or be ahead of the game.
It is hard to give advice about owning a post house in the future because, with the accelerated advance of technology, we have no clue what a ‘post house’ will be in the future! Did we imagine that we would have HD cameras for $1500 10 years ago?
With all that being said; read, study the pros, practice, learn the rules then break the rules. Learn to manage your money.
good luck!

Graeme, you are correct. It’s been a while since I did my tests and I confused de-interlace with the upper levels of flicker filter. You are also correct that de-interlace renders faster than strobe of one and I’ll use that instead. (… sorry i can’t purchase your filters yet! ;

I use the FCP ‘strobe of 1’ every week for broadcast and it gives a very good non-video, close to film feel. Combine that with good color correct to compensate for the thin DV saturation. I usually crush the blacks a little and increase the mids slightly and lower the highs.
Lighting plays a big part in any attempt to create a film look for video.
It *does not* create a ‘strobe’ effect; it merely simulates the fewer fps rate of film. I’ve often been asked what I shoot my footage on for commercial, short and broadcast work. I usually shoot DV or Beta, but the footage never looks like video.
I’ve done extensive experiments with ‘strobe of 1’ and the various flavors of de-interlace and personally I prefer ‘strobe of 1’ to de-interlace.
It does not create any broadcast difficulties whatsoever and is a great option for those who don’t have the spare cash. Also Quicktime (pro?) has a film effect as an export option.

Is it out of sync when you lay to tape? Do you have reference going from your card to the deck? I usually monitor directly out of my AJA IO using the S-VHS cable. I get a cleaner signal that way. I have my deck going to the “A” input on the monitor, and the IO going to the “B” input. For sync out of the IO, I use the ‘composite out’ going to the ‘Ref. Video’ input on the deck. I reverse it for digitizing from Beta. ‘Composite Out’ from the deck to ‘Ref. Loop’ on the IO.

My DSR-1500A has a menu option for adding set-up on analog output. I also have it added for proper viewing on my broadcast monitor. Otherwise the output will look too dark.

DV does carry line 21, but does so in the VAUX data area. The deck decodes line 21 on playback.

I usually use the strobe effect under video filters>video>strobe. I set the strobe to 1 frame. Couple that with some good color correction.

AJA IO LA to Mackie 1402 mixer to Mackie powered HR824s monitors. G5 output to rca ‘tape inputs’ on 1402.
