    You can use the AJA IO series on a MacIntel with updated drivers.

    The IO has been a solid product for us; FW latency hasn’t been really a problem.

    Here’s a site (based in Minnesota, but includes national) that gives averages, medians and percentiles. Of course, what has been previously said still applies.

    Sony specifies that, for a DSR-1500 DV deck, both the computer system *and* the deck must be shut down. We’ve already had to have our deck serviced once because we assumed we could hot-swap.

    Although “it’s easier to say ‘USB doesn’t have the sustained throughput required for video'”; that doesn’t explain why. I had to clarify because two posts said that USB ‘wasn’t fast enough’, which is technically not true. That’s why people get confused by the different specifications and applications of USB and Firewire. As professionals we try to avoid wasted time and wasted money.

    Plus, for crying out loud, it’s not really covered in the freakin’ manual. ;

    Your problem is more fundamental which doesn’t really have to do with sustained throughput.

    USB devices are asynchronous, which means that any device has the power to send any amount of data at any time. If two devices decide to talk at once, their data can collide with each other. If the traffic

  • FCP is ok for minor fixes, but I’ve found that Soundtrack is much better at major fixes. It has a lot more high quality filters. It’s seriously saved by backside a few times!

    Of course, if your audio is *real* bad, well you can only do so much.

  • Try doing a Audio Mixdown on your sequence. Sequence>Render Only>Mixdown or Opt>Cmd>R. This creates a separate audio file for your sequence to read for playback (doesn’t effect actual audio).

    You can use Preview, which is in your Dock or under Applications. You can check for the alpha channel under Get Info>Details.

    You can drag a selection of images to the Preview icon in the Dock and they will open up in a window with a drawer of images. As you arrow down the Details window will change accordingly.
