You should definitely check out Belle Nuit https://www.belle-nuit.com/subtitler/index.html

Although the learning curve is a little steep to begin with, it is really very efficient when it comes to spotting. I’ve subtitled several feature-length docs using it and strongly recommend it.

Sometimes perseverance pays off: upgraded to the latest version of MPEG Streamclip (1.9.2) which allows audio export (as AIFF etc)

Update – I’ve been able to export to QT using MPEG Streamclip, even though the application says that MXF is an unsupported file type.

The problem however is with the audio which is also in this format. It’s not difficult to identify and open the relevant audio clips, but attempting to export to any flavour of QT results in “Error: no movie frame”. This is obviously all in the metadata that went missing.

To add to my frustration, I can even hear and see the clip in FCP’s Log & Transfer tool (in sync), I just can’t ingest it.

Is there a way round this? I should point out that although I do have the tape as an absolute backup, I don’t have a deck and as the nearest hire facility is a good two-and-a-half hour’s drive away, so if there is a workround out there I’d love to try it.

Thanks for this, folks. Just for the record, I have access to a Digibeta as a source player, wasn’t suggesting that the Panasonic would accept the Digibeta tapes.

If it’s a one-off, you could simply pay a facility that has A. Duck to do the transfer for you.

Try the local press. The Hull Daily Mail produces their own video reports

Check the size of your project file, especially if you’re working on a large or complex piece. It can help if you slim it down by splitting the project up and adopting a different workflow.

Break the project down first into Media/Edits, then further down into chapters/acts/interviews, whatever seems most logical. Also weed out redundant edits by archiving them, keeping the project with your main edit up to date and as lean as possible.

There’s no problem for FCP to have multiple projects open simultaneously, you can copy, cut and paste between them.
