Darren, just because those guys (Kramer & Rabinowitz) have good video tutorials doesn’t mean that they’re the only ones on the forum qualified to help with your issue. The other moderators here all excel in their field, and you do them a disservice by implying that only the opinions of your preferred gurus will be welcome.
Besides, Andrew Kramer is not even a forum moderator.

RAM Preview is not Shift 0, it’s just 0. Shift 0 is alternate (secondary) RAM Preview.
I’m on a laptop as well. I just mouse over to the dang RAM Preview button in the Time Controls.

Or you could duplicate your layer and set the bottom one to Inverted Luma Matte. If your object turn out semi-transparent, add Levels to the top layer and push the outside triangles inward.

You might want to play around with the Leave Color effect. If the color of the bouquet is not found anywhere else in the shot you might get an acceptable result. If it is, you could duplicate the layer and apply the HSV effect to the bottom layer. Then animate a junk matte around just the bouquet on the top layer. Apply leave color to the top layer and animate its value. Animate the value of the HSV effect on the bottom layer to be in tandem with Leave Color on the layer above. You might be able to connect the two effects via an expression.

Is Pixel Aspect Correction switched on? This may just be After Effects’ somewhat crude display implementation. If P.A.C. is on, switch it off and look at the squeezed result. Is it still jaggy? Have you tried rendering out a small section?
With HD (& HDV)it seems that AE and Quicktime are still not really speaking the same language.
I’m just glad that AE can directly import .mxf files now. I was having no end of problems getting correctly interpreted DVCPro footage.Joey Foreman

Well, I went ahead and brought a video clip NTSC/DV into a new project and previewed it. Same black bars on the sides. This is just how Ecore previews, right? Very unattractive. Hope it doesn’t encode that way.
