What will you be using to move the HD stills? Moving Picture? RED? AE? Avid Pan and Scan?

Since you already have AMD, you just need to borrow or purchase a used software version of Xpress Pro (might not understand any MC-specific effects used) or Media Composer to dump all those sequences out one last time. Save them somewhere safe so you don’t have to go back to the Avid again.

Seriously, you could do this with a laptop loaded with Avid (and you would have to install your AMD software for this one job only). Visit the AMD site and make sure your software version is compatable with the Avid you are purchasing or borrowing.

Short of that, take your projects on a thumb drive to a post house or a Digital Service Station that has the Duck. They will do this for an hourly charge.

An immediate fix to your situation might be to delete the database files and let Avid “find” them again.

To insure that you are going about it the way Avid intended, make sure your workflow is like this:

It might. Or it might not. 🙂

Seriously, Avid works well with lots of build-it-yourself systems. The video card does seem to be critical for compatability, however. But this is what I don’t understand…why would you spend your time trying to build a system instead of buying an approved one? Just how much money do you think you can save? Wouldn’t you make up the savings on a couple of projects, not have to tinker under the hood too often and have the benefit of Avid support for your machine?

I like enjoy building project computers just like I enjoy working on and building vintage cars, but I don’t want to trust my livelihood to the unknown, unforeseen problems that will likely occur on out of spec computers when a project deadline looms.

Your mileage may vary, of course, but if editing is your main income, why not work day-to-day on an approved Avid workstation and build and tweak a separate system for your own knowledge, understanding and entertainment? Then you can report back what works well and what doesn’t. It could be very valuable information for those of us looking for a reliable second, third or fourth system. Most of the editors on this list don’t seem to have time to do this research.

Another choice for lower priced editing furniture is Anthro.

But I agree that most any table surface will do if you have the right height for how you work and find a comfortable surface edge. I hate the typical Winsted edge on the table surface…much too sharp an edge for me…I prefer more of a “bull nose” or rounded edge to rest my forearms and elbows on all day. If you and/or your clients care more about your editing content and don’t really care about how your edit space looks, IKEA would suffice.

Try relinking to the footage. If this doesn’t work, try deleting the databases and let Avid rebuild them. If these don’t work, you may have a corruption in your Avid user files. Try deleting those and build a new one.

I know these are very basic suggestions, but you need to be sure they are not the problem before you try manipulating the footage files. Do you have access to the files on the P2 cards or Firestore or a backup hard drive?

First: what format and frame rate did you shoot?

Second: just edit the footage to the timeline and create a new video track over top of all the clips. Insert a flip effect on the whole timeline in this new track (flip can be found in the effect palette under “image”).
