September 25, 2013 at 11:20 pm in reply to: Any XH-A1 users here face this issue?

This is for Paolo. I’m also using the DN-60 while simultaneously recording to tape. All was fine for a long time, then the last couple of shoots after “make media files” is performed, when I transfer the file to my computer and attempt to import the file into Vegas Pro I can only get the first few seconds of audio. I know the entire audio file is there because I can play the video in Windows Media Player, and it captures as a proper M2t file. Any ideas?

John, recorded in HDV, so .M2t. What I’m finding confusing is that I haven’t changed anything, doing exactly as before but now, even though I know the audio is there only the first few seconds show up when I open the file in the trimmer or on the timeline. Weird. I took the precaution of backing up my audio by simultaneously recording on a Zoom H4n so I can save the project.

August 25, 2013 at 12:59 am in reply to: Canon XL1S

Well Bob, I think I have some bad news, and some more bad news. My guess is that either the main circuit board (which had to be replaced on mine way back in 2002) or an audio circuit board is blown. Also, Canon no longer supports this model series so I don’t know if you can even get this repaired. Sorry. Might be time for new hardware.

April 17, 2013 at 12:31 pm in reply to: Hiding extra wireless bodypack mic cable

Chris, while technically what you’re saying seems like it should make sense, as Eric said I’ve also done all of the above and never encountered any problems. I’ve been on literally hundreds and hundreds of interview shoots in offices, homes, operating rooms, Central American rainforests, construction sites, skyscraper rooftops, etc., etc., and never a problem with where or how I stowed the extra mic. cable. If someone has suggested otherwise I would be suspicious of their particular piece of equipment, perhaps a broken shield or some other cable malfunction.

    Ben,
Is that mic in or out of warranty? Even if it’s out of warranty my own past experience with Azden when I used to own a couple of their mid-range wireless systems (I use AT now) was very positive. I found them to be very receptive and accommodating, bending over backwards to solve any problems. They even replaced a way out of warranty beltpack transmitter for me. If Wayne Alonso is still there contact him as I found him to be one of the best customer service oriented people I’ve encountered in more than 40 years in photo/video/av work.

I should mention that if I double click on the file outside of Vegas it opens and plays in Windows Media Player with no issues, so I know the audio files are there.

I’ve been using YouSendit ever since a client recommended it. I upgraded to the paid service and knew that it would automatically renew every year unless I stopped it. No complaints here.

Here’s a really nice light that I’ve been using for a while. I now have four of them and they can inter-connect to form different combinations depending on need. Lots of light, dimmable, well built and very efficient.

Mark’s right, always have a backup plan and today that was a shotgun, which I employed when one of the presenters walked away from the table with her mic turned off and decided to walk among the audience while talking. I always have a small field mixer at my position to manage levels as needed. Boundary layer mics are also in my toolkit. You just can’t have enough toys.

Funny thing guys, right after I wrote this I got booked for a vodeo shoot where I wound up doing exactly as I described above. I did the sound check today and it’s perfect. Final sound check and shoot tomorrow. And as Brent says, each speaker has a lav.
