Thank you. Do you have any experience with the Blackmagic Design Video Assist?

October 6, 2015 at 3:06 am in reply to: Sennheiser G3 vs Audio Technica 1801 Dual Wireless SystemI’ve been using the AT 1800 series equipment for several years and my experience with them has been that they are rugged, stable, quiet and have performed flawlessly under a variety of indoor and outdoor conditions. They are a bit larger and heavier, and my only real criticism is that the display could be bigger and clearer, but that’s a convenience issue, not a performance issue.

I’ll second what Blaise said. The Datavideo DN-60 has extended the useful life of my Canon XH-A1S. It’s very cost effective and has improved my workflow. No more tapes.

I’ve been using the Datavideo DN-60 for a couple of years. Best bang for the buck.

From reading the specs it appears to me to be an ac powered unit only, using the included transformer. If the transformer is 12V you can probably use any 12V battery pack with a cord with the appropriate connector, probably a coaxial connector. Run time is, of course, dependent on battery capacity and power setting.

Good question. When I looked them up I got Smart Sounds. Stock20 became my #1 go to collection.

December 18, 2013 at 8:16 pm in reply to: Recording with 4 wireless microphones on a two camera shootAre the camcorders handheld or on tripods? Running stereo to two handheld camcorders would be cumbersome. If you can live with mono then this is easy. The four mics into a mixer (are they wireless or wired)? If wireless then you’ll need six wireless kits. If wired then you only need two wireless kits. I’m assuming you have access to frequency agile wireless kits. Attach the transmitter, either plug-on or beltpack to an output of the mixer (be sure to match output impedance to input impedance). Each camcorder gets a receiver, tuned to the channel of the transmitter. Make sure someone is operating the mixer and that each camera operator is monitoring the camera audio both visually and with headphones. Your done. I’ve done this hundreds of times in all kinds of venues from NYC skyscrapers to Central American rain forests. One more caveat, hopefully you’ll have enough setup time to be sure there are no competing channels in your immediate operating area. Surprises during the shoot are no fun. Good luck.

Thanks Roger. As I was reading your reply I remembered that I encountered this same issue while using someone else’s XH-A1 & A1S on a shoot of some surgery in California three years ago. I do have a DN-60 so maybe that’s my only recourse at this point.
