September 25, 2012 at 6:56 pm in reply to: How to record sound/audio at panel with multiple peopleYou can hook up multiple mics into one transmittter by running them into a small mixer and feeding the mixer output to the wireless transmitter (do you have the right cables?). If you don’t have a mixer and don’t want to buy one consider renting. This is especially easy if you have a plug-on transmitter but I’ve done it plenty of times with beltpacks. Make sure the transmitter input is set correctly to mic or line per the mixer’s output. Make sure you have a full set of adapters on hand (direct box, inline pads, ground lifters, etc.) to deal with any issues. Also, take plenty of time to do a thorough sound check. And make sure you monitor continuously. Do you have an assistant who can separately monitor the mixer while you monitor the camcorder? This is an easy job but you have to be very thorough.

August 30, 2012 at 6:37 pm in reply to: shure fp5 and fp1 – the worst mic I ever used ?No doubt that is one hellishly rf-rich environment. Are your receivers picking up strong signals with your transmitters off? I would be very surprised if there isn’t a ton of cross-channel interference going on in that place. Almost makes me glad the proposal to hire me to do some video of events there didn’t pan out.

August 27, 2012 at 4:58 pm in reply to: Need advise from experience light people to choose a cheap quartz set up on ebay etcWhere are you located? I have two Lowel Softlight 2 units available for sale. They’re in excellent condition, one with a traveling case, one in it’s original box. They can take two lamps for up to 2K watts each, depending on the lamps used. These are perfect for interview setups. Send me your contact info at videobyjoel@aol.com and write “interested in Lowel Softlights” in the subject line and I’ll send you full specs and an asking price.

The Audio Technica 1800 series includes a version with a dual-channel receiver with separate outputs and volume controls. Azden also has a dual channel system but I’d put my faith in Audio Technica. They have kits that include two lavs, a lav and plug-on (for handhelds) or one of each. I use the 1800 series and it works great.

What I use and consider the best bang for the buck is the Datavideo DN-60. Simple, straightforward, does what it’s supposed to do and has one important feature it’s more expensive cousins lack: a choice between FAT-32 and NTFS file systems. NTFS allows uninterrupted long form recording without the file size limitations of FAT-32. I have an XH-A1S. I record simultaneously to tape & CF flash and always will as they back each other up. Check it out online, great prices at B&H Photo in NY.

It’s unlikely to be replaced, they’ll probably disassemble, clean and re-assemble the lens.

I would not subject the lens to any extremes of cold or heat or attempt to do anything at all, for fear of violating the warranty. Seal it in a ziploc type bag until you can send it out.
