What type of subclips do you need? You can export an ALE from the bin, optionally modify the ALE (into V-only, for example), then import the ALE, and choose “merge with known sources and create subclips”.

All version ship with both Mac and PC installers on the same disk, so that won’t matter. AFAIK, the only way to buy educational is from a brick & morter reseller, where one will have to prove that one is eligible for an Academic license. Quite often, film schools or training institutes will have a shop that can sell you Academic licenses, but in theory, any reseller should be able to.

OK, to be a bit more honest, Avid’s effects handling, while sufficient for most, is not as flexible as FCP’s.
FCP is resolution independent up to almost 4K, IRRC. With Avid, you get PAL, NTSC, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. Nothing more, nothing less, nothing in between.

Avid doesn’t do XML. It does AAF, though.

And the great thing about Avid is: 30 day free trial version, fully functional.

Do same-as-source. Supply him with the Avid QT codec. Have him render to ProRes. DNxHD, unlike ProRes, is cross-platform, and free. You don’t need to defend your machine.
