Goodbye FCP, Hello Avid
Hello All,
I did it. I’ve installed Media Composer, an MC Transport and the MXF update for Davinci Resolve. Away we go. I originally learned MC way back in 1994 at an artist run co-op, and have since been on everything including Media 100, Premiere, MC Express, FCP, Razor, Vegas – everything but a bycycle. I’m primarily an animator/designer but my editing package is where everything starts and ends.
I was genuinely disappointed in the direction that Apple took with FCP as well as having dumped Shake and Color. I really don’t need my editing package to do my compositing, animation or color correction – I just need it to edit and talk to everyone else (broadcast monitor included).
This summer, I really gave premiere pro a go again. The functionality promises are really attractive. After about 6 weeks of crashes, disappointing functionality (edls, media management, xml export are not ready for primetime + mercury engine = not all that.)
I decided to take AVID up on their competitive crossgrade. I installed it and opened it up and low and behold, its pretty much the same thing I was looking at 15 years ago. The feel is totally retro and kind of made me laugh just a bit. After the FCP-X debacle, though, I was happy to see something that looked like an editing package.
I’ve used it for a quick spot and there’s something quite excellent about 3 point editing that I’ve been missing. I’m brushing up with the FCP->Avid stuff from Lynda and everything seems to be making sense.
Anyways, rather than lurking, I just wanted to introduce myself and say hello.
Onwards and upwards.
– Justin
