Once you make an object editable you no longer have direct control of its segments, which is the downside of converting to polygons. You must then use the mesh tools to subdivide and modify those polygons.

In order to reproduce the example image you could create a standard sphere with enough segments to create the point density that you are looking for, and then using loop selection delete rows as desired. Here I created a 100 cm sphere with 75 segments, made it editable, selected all points, and then using loop selection with the cmd key deselected the rows I wanted to keep.

I then deleted all the selected points and used X-Particles to create geometry for the points so that they would render.

Starting from a 4x4x4 segmented cube (above), after making it editable I used the Loop/Path Cut tool to add geometry between the upper block of segments. You could start from a 1x1x1 cube and do the same to add equal divisions in only the Y axis, or in any other.

If you could provide more information as to what your ultimate goal is it would helpful in offering further advice.

You could enable Custom Initial Velocity in the Dynamics Tag of the feather to give it an initial velocity in the Y direction while keeping gravity (Project Settings > Dynamics > Gravity) at the standard of 1000 cm, and then keyframe gravity to a low value at the apex of the feather’s upward trajectory to slow down its fall.

    For example: 11094_slowfall.c4d.zip

Edit: As I’m writing Brian beats me to it again with what is probably a better solution.

It looks like it might have been done using Trapcode Mir in After Effects, but a basic setup for something similar in C4D would be to add a Displacer with a noise shader to a plane and animate its position. To add the random vertical displacement increase the Animation Speed in the Shader Properties above zero. Adjust (or animate) the Height setting in the Displacer’s “Object” properties as well.

    Here’s a simple project file: 11092_displacerexample.c4d.zip

Render Settings > Save > Multi-Pass Image > Multi-Layer File – uncheck this box and you should get individual image files for each pass you have set up. Enabling that option, and selecting the Photoshop (PSD) format, will give you a multi-layer file that will open in Photoshop with all the passes as layers.

February 28, 2017 at 10:54 pm in reply to: adding video file to material as texture

From C4D’s built-in help: Appendix > File Formats > Video Formats

    Avi

    Tip:
Note that the availability of video codecs depends on the platform being used and may, in some cases, not be available (e.g., not all codecs are available for Win 64).

This format can be read and written only under Windows. Using QuickTime, AVI animations can also be used on the Macintosh, depending on the codec. When using AVI animations as textures, only the first video track is evaluated; all others (e.g., music) are ignored. If the first video track contains data other than images these are also ignored.

Only 24-bit formats are supported. If you have selected AVI System and the message ‘Unable to write file’ appears it is most probably caused by a codec which does not support 24-bit data (such as Microsoft RLE).

    QuickTime

To use QuickTime under Windows, ensure that QuickTime is installed on your computer. You can download a QuickTime installer from Apple’s Website. When using QuickTime animations as textures, only the first video track is evaluated; all others (e.g., music or QuickTime VR) are ignored. If the first video track contains data other than images these are also ignored.

All codecs that are installed in the operating system are supported. Alpha channels are integrated directly into the animation only if the compressor supports this. For the QuickTime format these are the compressions Animation and None (i.e. uncompressed). In both cases, the number of colors must be set to Millions of Colors+.

I’m sorry, but what I see looks like two green insects highlighted in your image. Are those the extruded tree you mention? Without more information, and a project file to examine, anyone trying to help could only guess at what you are trying to accomplish.

[Bill George] “Is it possible to reflect a video file onto a my moving 3d chrome object ?”

Yes. Just use a video file instead of an image file in the texture applied to your sky.

Based on your recent questions, I would suggest that you look into tutorials. Here’s a good place to start:

Booles create the union, intersection, or difference (subtraction) of solids. Since solids cannot have feathered edges, neither can the objects created by applying boolean operations to them.
