That’s my issue…we’re looking at upgrading at the moment – initially thoughts were Smoke as a main suite and FCP as a secondary – but after seeing what PPro2 and Axio HD can do for RT uncompressed HD..it looks pretty special.

That said – people (namely snobby clients) just don’t like the word “Premiere” do they!? I mean, for me it still reminds me of that old heap of cr*p I edited on at college. It’s going to be hard for Adobe to shake that stigma, unless they re-name it..which it doesn’t look like they’re doing!
Other problem for us is that there are not many Premiere freelancers out there, so we’d struggle I think. Though I have heard Prem is VERY similar to FCP?

Does anyone know of a Mac/FCP setup that could match Axio HD for speed? I think that would be safer for us. I hate to be safe, but when it’s not your money… 😉

Thanks but I’ve already got Premiere Pro2, bundled with my Production Studio. I only really use it for capture/playout, as I’m not an editor myself, but will try to use it more in my downtime – could be useful as a spill over suite when I get my PC spec’d up to the max for when we go HD.

The issue is more that our editor is used to a very elegant Quantel UI w/pen & tablet environment and after that PPro2, or even FCP are a just mass of windows and billions of buttons. Also PP2/FCP lack alot of the vfx/compositing tools we will need for our main suite, hence the thought to go Smoke.
For our second suite FCP is looking like the main route to go, as hardly any of the freelancers round here can use PP2, which is a shame as Axio looks like some red-hot fire breathing sheete!

What we do is upload the clip in a zip file to a locked area of our website (i.e: you can’t navigate to it unless you know the EXACT url of that filename) and then we just email them a link of the actual file itself to click on and download straight from the email.

That saves them trawling through all their jobs/versions of each job in their ‘client folder’.

Just get a fast server, a decent ftp client (I use Flash FXP) and lots of webspace. We’ve got several GB and it wasn’t that expensive.

We tend to put a disclaimer on each email stating that their clip will be held on our site for 3 months, in which time they can either view directly from our server or d/load a copy to their HDD.

Bum, only just bought the current Production Studio! 🙁 Themz the breaks..

My major problem with the new release is that Audition has been dumped for a watered down version within the studio, meaning when I do upgrade I’ll lose Audition, or have to pay out for the full version!!

On the upside though..new versions of AE and PS eh? Tasty.

I am particularly interested in getting a suite downstairs that will integrate well/talk to a Smoke or DS Nitris. I think FCP is poss our best route – mainly because our secondary suite is mostly used by freelancers and it is a well known fact that PPro2 doesn’t have anywhere near as many users. On the other hand, the integration between PPro2 and AE/PS, etc is very useful. I also have PPro2 on my gfx PC aswell which could be useful for spill over work…Hmm..

OR could an FCP HD/Axio HD be used as our main editor ASWELL? The only main problem with that is the lack of compositing/FX capability within PPro2 & FCP…also the UI is not a patch on something like a Smoke for speed of use.

But there is an awfully big price difference!…Thoughts?

Thanks Willie, I was going to try just go straight for the Rolands anyway and if my boss says ‘too much’ then Behringers were my backup. Behringer not upto much then? I thought they were suppossed to be pretty good…are they a bunch of pretenders then!? 😉

So, just to clarify – looking at the specs, do they *APPEAR* to be very similar products? I have mimimal experience with audio, but they looked very similar technically. Obviously the Rolands are the better product though..

OT – thinking into the future – when our facility goes HD, then it will obviously open up 5.1 sound, etc. This is probably not a massive consideration for me, being mainly gfx (and quick fix audio guy) but what are my best monitoring options if we were using 5.1? Obviously I want whatever I buy now to be adaptable and as future proof as poss…could I add more pairs of DS-5’s and a sub later on for a bigger setup, or is it the kind of thing where you would have a specific 5.1 speaker set?

AE is a 32-bit app..it will only recognise 2GB of RAM. If you flip the 3GB switch (search 3gb switch on the cow) AE will see 3…but never 4, not until it becomes a 64-bit application. The extra RAM will only come in handy when you’ve got alot of programs open at once.
