As Tom advises, shoot wide. When you author the DVD in DVDSP, set the flags for widescreen. If the playback device is set correctly for the monitor it is attached to, it will playback widescreen on a 16×9, and letterboxed on a 4×3

If you can’t choose your shooters, that’s fine.
Most TC breaks are avoidable, and 25 tapes with 20 breaks in each is nuts unless the tapes were logged in the field.
Or maybe I just expect too much anymore.

and after all that, vow not to work with that shooter again until he/she knows what they are doing.

One thing to keep in mind is that the crossgrades and upgrades are currently inexpensive. These were prices that were originally due to expire in mid-December that were then extended.
I don’t know if Apple intends to terminate the offer anytime soon, but might want to take advantage of these prices while they last.

There is still an issue with 2-pass VBR. As Todd says, stick to one pass CBR or VBR

In disk utility, highlight your boot drive, under the first aid tab, select repair permissions. Conventional wisdom suggests doing this after installing anything, after a hard freeze, and just every so often when you think of it. I think it’s sort of similar to the old rebuild desktop routine pre-OS X

you are just sleeping the machine. If you are intent on powering down with everything still open, press and hold the power button until it turns off.
I would repair permissions after re-starting.

    Robin,
upon re-reading your post, and seeing it also happens with Shake renders, it must be an FCP issue. I’ve been assuming it was an AE issue
