Are you compositing it over the video BG in Motion? Maybe you should just render out the text with alpha channel and composite it over the video in FCP.

The G4 limits you from using the best cards, but if you can find a Radeon 9800 Pro with 256 MB VRAM, that would be your best bet.

Great tip for folks. I also frequently use the Illustrator shapes as both masks and motion paths (great spiral, for example).
Another one is to use dingbat fonts in the AE text tool.

Open the Get Info window and in OPEN WITH indicate Preview (assuming you’re in Tiger). Be sure to click on the button to make this the default behavior for similar files.

What exactly are you asking? For clarification on how the fade in/out behavior works?

Play the behavior (or at least scrub through it in the mini- or full timeline).
If the behavior is not working, you can use keyframes to animate the start or end % (in the inspector > text > layout tab ) to have the type appear sequentially.
