Try selecting the words individually in the Canvas using the Type tool and changing the settings with the Dashboard.

Different particle systems impact performance differently.
If you are using particles extensively, upgrade the video card to an ATI x800 or nVidia 6800 or better.
The 9800 card can be unbearably slow with particles, almost as bad as the 8600 in my Powerbook.
One thing you can try is changing the emitter parameters to make it less taxing on the system.

1. You cannot have empty pixels on the Background layer (the name is italicized). Rename the layer or make a copy of it and work on the copy.
2. There are many ways to cut out pixel areas. Have you tried the extract tool?

Skewing and distorting can also be done with key-modified click-dragging transform box handles.

What do you mean by “a complete mess?”
The pen tool is an excellent tool for creating paths, and you can make a path from a selection.

A standard DVD uses the following settings (NTSC signal):
720×480 non-square pixels
29.97 fps
DV-NTSC compressor
48KHz 16-bit stereoThis would then be compressed to MPEG-2 for the video, and your choice of formats for audio (pcm –wav or aiff– or AC-3).

I always do my path text by creating a type layer, drawing an open mask path with the pen tool, then making that mask the text path. To animate the text along the path animate the start % (left-aligned text) or end % (right-aligned text).

Consider making a still image of the cloned skin pixels, making a layer of it and apply the motion track to it.

Press the Zero key on the numeric keypad to Ram Preview. Make sure the Play Audio button is activated in the Time Controls window.
You can also scrub audio by command-dragging (Mac) / control-dragging (Windows)through the Timeline window’s time ruler.
