I guess it all depends on what your expectations are. I love the image from this camera, it’s all we use (Canon 5D, 7D, T2i). Vegas Pro 10 will edit the files natively, without transcoding to Cineform. If you are expecting it to edit as smoothly as the old standard def .avi files, it won’t. But that’s a lot to ask. Same for almost any alternative camera as well, since most use AVCHD or h.264.

Just be careful as Neoscene that worked for VP9 does not work for VP10. Not sure if the inverse is true also. Also, the trasncoded files from Neoscene will be .avi files, the native Canon files are .mov, so it isn’t that simple to switch between these files in the Vegas timeline. If you have hundreds of .mov files this would be very painful, so maybe FIRST rename the Neoscene files to .mov before placing them on the Vegas timeline. This way when you point Vegas to the new file directory it will find all the same names (in a different format) and will be happy. And you will be happy not to replace each one individually in Vegas 🙂

Yup, I do this all the time. In fact you can select specific region portions of events on different tracks and you can then paste these to another area or even another project. I use a separate project all the time as my “trimmer” to copy/paste to the main project.

June 3, 2011 at 11:00 am in reply to: No Audio in nested Vegas pro 10 projects

I guess you are saying that it’s my machine, and not Vegas? Perhaps. But I never experienced this issue with about 2-3 years of using Vegas 8. Then the first time I try to nest with VP10 I get this issue. And before 10.0d Vegas would consistently hang and crash every day even when not nesting. Hey, I love Vegas and I’m sticking with it. But to me, and apparently others, there are still some major bugs that need to be addressed.

There are nesting bugs with audio in VP10. I posted a bug to Sony with specifics to what I did. They could not reproduce it and closed the case. You can read my thread on this forum here: https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/24/920497#920873

I’m curious about how to identify groups. I sometimes use them but see no way to determine what is grouped after the fact.

For me, 10d is so much more stable than the previous v10 revisions. However, once in a while I do get a crash, and is usually due to copy/paste from multiple projects, and also from audio filter changes. It seems that audio editing & playback is worse than other releases, which is odd considering this is Vegas.

It’s hard to know for sure. Version 10 is unfortunately very buggy compared to many years and versions of rock solid performance. I personally blame it on the addition of 3D, who knows. I just updated to 10.0d and it seems better (that is, it hasn’t hung or crashed yet with a few days of use).

One thing to try when things don’t make sense like with your project is to open a new empty project at the same time as the one that crashes, then select all events, then edit/copy (or control-C) and paste the events to the new project. You will lose all track attributes (titles, filters, etc.) but it often fixes weird problems.

April 30, 2011 at 7:16 pm in reply to: Vegas Pro 10D to offer better CUDA support?

[Dave Haynie]“Actually, learning to do multithreading and multiprocessing correctly was revolutionary”
Yes, agreed. I was one of the first people to program on Windows NT and Windows 95, which introduced multi-threading. A lot of race conditions to worry about.

[Dave Haynie]“I think if Sony weren’t so preoccupied with 3D…”
I certainly feel that their focus on 3D has allowed way too many bugs to appear in a very solidly built code base before version 10. I have no interest in 3D and personally think it’s a passing trend, like the Laserdisc and Blu-ray (I think we are all going to digital cloud storage).

Anyway, I would love to have CUDA support for preview. I would also love to have the ability to set the preview quality in the Trimmer, as it can only be played in Full quality and is basically useles with h.264 footage.

April 26, 2011 at 12:03 pm in reply to: Veggie audio to Parent Veg?

I do think there are new bugs in Vegas Pro 10, particularly in nesting. I brought this up in an earlier thread (https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/24/920497#920873) and was never resolved by Sony. They said they couldn’t reproduce my problem.

Matthew, I’d be curious if your problem occurs in Vegas 8 or 9.

Recently I just tried to nest a veg that had a single mp3 audio file on the timeline and it appears to have caused my parent veg to crash a couple times. I had to render out the mp3 veg to a wav and replace the nested veg with that wav, and I no longer get crashes.

It’s too bad, I went from version 8 which had no bugs in my workflow now to version 10.0c which does seem to have bugs.
