Hey all. I do mostly audio post (in SAWSTudio), and this was my first time doing an actual video project in Vegas 10(c). It was a school project for my daughter that incorporated a number of clips of varying formats and sizes from cell phones and digital cameras, as well as audio clips of varying format and sample rate. Constant and unpredictable spontaneous reboots of my system, which is a core i7 running XP pro, both during playback and rendering. I converted all the audio to 48k wav files and replaced. No change. I removed all of one type of video clip and successfully rendered, so I converted all those clips to uncompressed avi and replaced. Still crashing. We finally got the project finished by rendering to uncompressed avi in a number of short segments, then marrying them together in a new project before creating an mp4 version for YouTube. I’m at a loss as to where to look for the problem. Is there some common system setting that can cause this type of behavior?

It’s hard to know for sure. Version 10 is unfortunately very buggy compared to many years and versions of rock solid performance. I personally blame it on the addition of 3D, who knows. I just updated to 10.0d and it seems better (that is, it hasn’t hung or crashed yet with a few days of use).

One thing to try when things don’t make sense like with your project is to open a new empty project at the same time as the one that crashes, then select all events, then edit/copy (or control-C) and paste the events to the new project. You will lose all track attributes (titles, filters, etc.) but it often fixes weird problems.

[Jim Greene] ” I just updated to 10.0d and it seems better (that is, it hasn’t hung or crashed yet with a few days of use).”

    Agree wholeheartedly.
There have been very few complaints since this release as Sony seems to have caught the remaining bugs.
Not to say that there aren’t a few lurking somewhere but, if they are, they’re pretty well hidden.

Thanks, guys. Just updated to 10.0d so I’ll see if this buggy project runs any smoother.

[Constant and unpredictable spontaneous reboots of my system, which is a core i7 running XP pro, both during playback and rendering.]

If your system is actually restarting, it could be an indication of one of the following:

    • a cooling problem with your CPU
    • a silent blue screen which you are not seeing because your Startup & Recovery settings on System Failure are set to ‘Automatically Restart’ (it’s in control panel under System properties > Advanced > Startup & Recovery [Settings]
    • The blue screen (if there is now one appearing) might indicate where there problem lies.

On my old XP editing system the NVIDIA SATA drivers, specifically NVATA.SYS was causing instant reboots under load. I simply uninstalled the NVIDIA drivers I had recently obtained from NVIDIA and rolled the SATA drivers in device manager right back to the ones that XP was shipped with back in 2001. The crashes stopped.

Hmm, some of the crashes have briefly flashed a blue screen. I’ve always been a little suspicious of my NVIDIA video drivers, but hadn’t given any thought to the SATA drivers. And I hadn’t experienced these crashes until this project using SVP 10. Thanks, I’ll take a look at everything you mentioned here.

Well, I can’t find any NVIDIA SATA drivers. Looks like mine is an Intel driver. And, interestingly, “Automatically Restart” wasn’t checked in my preferences. Back to the drawing board. Can you tell me where the crash logs are stored?

You could have a look through event viewer and look for entries with red flags next to them. Type ‘eventvwr’ after clicking start > run. Look for video driver or disk i/o errors.

From what you have described, the error might not actually have time to write out to the log file (in my case, but I was able to see the blue screen message as it stayed there for about 20 seconds. My particular issue took several months to figure out).

You might want to see if Device Manager is reporting any conflicts, usually shown by a yellow triangle and an exclamation mark. It could indicate a driver conflict issue causing the restarts.

You may also want to try uninstalling Vegas, restarting your PC, then reinstalling it. I notice you have installed 10c, so you might want to give 10d a go.

Lastly, XP is pretty buggy. Since going to Windows 7 x64, I have not had one spontaneous reboot. I briefly dabbled with Vista x64, but that ran so slowly and occasionally crashed.
