In addition to Johnny’s sage advice, you can also try Animation Presets.

Highlight your text layer then – Go to “animation” –> Browse Presets.
This should bring up a window of folders (possibly in Adobe Bridge) – double click the “Text” folder then find a folder called “3d Text” then find a preset called “3d Fly down behind” — double click that to apply it to your layer.

Twirl down Range selector One then twirl “Advanced” and change the “Based On” to words. I think this is the effect you are trying to achieve? After Effects gives you key frames for the duration of the words flying in which you can adjust to your taste — adding hold frames for example to creat a pause in the words flying in etc.

This preset will have words flying on — time reverse the key frames and they will fly off towards the camera then past and off the screen.

    I hope this helps….

  • Good thought, but no — motion blur is off…

the problem is, the camera is in a large 3D room and the camera pulls back in Z space and “finds” this text layer and when it comes up to it it is very close to camera – (imagine craning up to a Budweiser Banner in the back of a bar up near the ceiling).

And that text layer is really zoomed in — because it is so close to the camera lens — (I had to turn the scale down to about 6%) — because, while it is in the right spot, it is way too big. And it needs to be continuously rasterized to correct the resolution distortion of the camera blowing it up so large (probably 600% or so) and then me scaling it down…

It all works perfectly for the text layer, but the layer that has “Optical Flares” on it won’t obey the camera when continuously rasterize is turned on for its layer.

    ** Success**

Turns out it works for scale (the amplitude was subtle so had to be increased to be noticeable). But, I got this error on orientation:

“Velocity is not supported for the orientation property.”
So it had to be used on “Rotation” where it worked PERFECTLY. (I really did test this before I posted Dan, I just didn’t see the bounce in the smaller icons because they were subtle — increasing amplitude helped.)

As always Dan, thank you for your amazing talents!!

You mean did I double pre-compose – once for the alpha layer and then again for the Matte?

Thanks Chris, but I definitely did precompose before using the matte…

Any thoughts about the fact that the matte is exact — not loose?

    Or any other thoughts??

PS, I am assuming I am supposed to be roto’ing the non-speed changed layer? (i.e. all the original frames)?

Is that correct or should I roto only the shorter scene after the 200% speed increase?
