I would suggest getting an older/original MacBookPro or even a G4 laptop. The older MacBookPro will give you the firewire and USB connections to connect the camera and external hard drives. A used G4 laptop will give you a slot to accept the P2 card itself.

That is the file structure for a Panasonic P2 camera shooting DVCPROHD.

To get the material into FCP: File>Log & Transfer. The Log and Transfer window opens up. Direct it to the contents file of the first card you want to bring into FCP. Select all and click add selection to cue. That will wrap the mxf files in a Quicktime wrapper and bring them into your project for editing.

Thanks for the follow up. In addition to monitoring the output from the DVCPRO deck on the Panasonic HD monitor…I’m also watching a direct feed from the deck to a JVC 4:3 monitor. There’s nothing interrupting the signal to the SD monitor. No computer…no Kona card. Just a straight shot to the monitor via BNC. And everything still looks good and with the proper perspective. Letter boxing on the top and bottom and no pillar boxes.

But on the air that’s not the case.

Any ideas?

Okay, so I went to the local NBC affiliate to investigate the problem. They played the DVCPRO tape of the commercial for me on one of their decks straight into an SD monitor. And sure enough, the image was pillar boxed and letter boxed. That’s on top of the letter boxing that occurred when I down converted from HD to SD for the tape out. The result is a much smaller image appearing on screen. The image did not look like this when I made the dub in my studio.

I returned to my studio and made another dub using the same process I did before- and everything looks perfect on my SD monitor via SDI. Just the letter boxing that occurred when I down converted the original edit to SD. The image files the monitor on the left and right. No pillar boxing.

A little more background: I edited the spot in HD 720 24p. I down converted to tape via the Kona 3 card and than logged and transfered that tape version to a Kona 525 29.97 timeline. I did this in order to insert a telephone number in the lower/right portion of the letter box. I than did a tape out of the final piece to DVCPRO via my Kona 3 card with SD to SD turned off so that there would be no vertical, horizontal, pillar boxing or letter boxing adjustments.

I’m going to take this latest dub I made back to the television station to see if it plays any differently than the first. But, at this point, I am really at a loss.

Is there some fault in my process?

Any insight is appreciated.

Jeremy,

I expect the image to be pillar boxed since it is an SD image on an HD television. But should it appear to be pillar boxed twice? As if there’s pillar boxing inside of pillar boxing?

Thanks for chiming in. Your perspective is always appreciated. You know, I was wondering if that might be the issue. I am trying to set up a meeting at the stations to see first hand how they handled the tape on ingest. If it’s as simple as they letter-boxed it a second time than the remedy is simple and not an issue on my end. Other than perhaps more explicit labeling.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in on my issues. I appreciate your help.

As I indicated earlier I down converted the HD timeline to DV50 and ran it through Compressor and DVDSP and still wasn’t overly pleased. But at least I was able to burn a DVD.

I than went back and exported from the HD timeline directly to Compressor again (for the sixth time). This time it worked successfully as it has in the past. The DVD that came from the HD timeline does look better than the down converted version. So will go with that as I make duplicates.

I don’t know why I changed how I have made DVDs in the past. I had been doing so much reading here on the COW that I think I got myself incredibly confused. I thought I had read some where recently to turn frame controls on. Apparently that’s not the case.

I attempted to go straight from my Pro Res 1920 x 1080 timeline to compressor with less than positive results. After more than 24 hours of Compressor working on the timeline I had nothing to show for it.

So, I am now exporting a down converted QUICKTIME reference movie (DV 50 anamorphic) of the one hour timeline and will see how compressor reacts to it.

Any more suggestions?

My workflow involves a real time down conversion to tape through my Kona 3 card. Than I recapture the video to an SD timeline and follow the usual steps for DVDSP.

As much as these posters believe in their Vocas matte boxes, I feel the same way about my Petroff. It’s durable, flexible and dependable. Everything is where it should be and operates as it should. The one negative is that when I put on my Century Optics .75 zoom through wide angle and have the lens on full wide I have to remove the matte box and use the Century Optics hood/filter holder in its place. If I’m not going full wide it’s not an issue. None the less, I still love the Petroff and would highly recommend it.
