Hey Tony:

It appears the question about the best way to get analog into the KONA 2, may not be so lame after all (see thread ‘K2 and what all else’ above).

I think the reason this question keeps popping up is that it points to a fundamental lack in I/O card design today — that is, creating an SD/HD card that supports all formats, yet has no built-in analog solution at the input stage. Lots of people are still dealing with legacy analog Beta SP. And to have to add another $1000 + (and a mess of other gear/cables) just to ingest the darn stuff is unfortunate. Especially when everything else about these cards is so well-designed.

I look forward to an all-SDI world someday, but by then, I’ll probably be shooting solid-state and maybe delivering a finished show the same way.

Seems to me the IO LA is the best deal — marginally cheaper than the Flying Cow and AJA converter box, portable, cleaner single firewire connect, and low(er) latency if used for playout.

Just wish my KONA 2 came with analog inputs, then I wouldn’t be singing this song!

So Bob, you don’t recommend putting these two cards in the same computer. Thanks for that info. I suspected as much. I have a few concerns regarding the IO LA and firewire solutions in general, mostly the latency issue. I admit, I am trying to minimize the cost of dealing with ‘legacy’ materials like Beta SP, especially with the continuing migration to HD — but I still have a number of corporate clients that shoot on Beta SP.

One last question, would the KONA LS work as an alternate solution? Can I fit that card in with a KONA 2 and a SATA card?

Thanks for the info. What is your take on the SeriTek solution? Would a 2-drive SATA array manage 10-bit SD? I’d raid the two internal SATA drives together, but I’m not too excited about having to boot off an external firewire drive.
