  • SATA DRIVE QUESTION…

    Hello:

Putting together a minimal Kona 2 set-up, and want to be able to do DVCProHD and 10-bit SD uncompressed for starters. Given that some of the processing of DVCProHD is handled by the Kona 2…would a single internal SATA drive in a G5 be fast enough to do DVCProHD (more than one stream?)…or is this wishful thinking?

If not, I’m thinking of a SeriTek card/enclosure with 2 400GB 16MB cache drives raided together (which I could build up to 8 later on…) to handle both DVCProHD and 10-bit. Would this work reasonably well?

My old Dual 500 G4 set-up never really played back even miniDV perfectly, even though I recall reading that a 7200 RPM drive with an 8 MB cache should have been more than ample to play back DV without dropping frames…

    Any advice appreciated.

    Best, JIM.

The Single SATA would handle a stream of 8 bit uncompressed, but… 10? probably not.

It will handle DVCPRO100 footage all day long. Probably a couple of streams at least.

    Jerry & Bob:

Thanks for the info. What is your take on the SeriTek solution? Would a 2-drive SATA array manage 10-bit SD? I’d raid the two internal SATA drives together, but I’m not too excited about having to boot off an external firewire drive.

    Best, JIM.
