    Hi all!
Will the 23″ CinemaDisplay work better with the HDLink than the 30″ when working with 1080 25p material from a Sony HDCAM deck?
Having just bought a Philips 37PF9986/12 and realizing that it doesn’t accept DVI-D, I would like avoid to make the same mistake again.

the native 1920 * 1080 esolution will allow exevry single pixel to be mapped to a phisical pixel on the display on 23inch displays.
the 30 requires scaling (reducing sharpness) or will simply not use most of the pixels IF you get it attached.

    so 23 here – yet.

we are looking for a 30 inch native 1920*1080 lcd – anyone knows one?

I’m an Apple lover and all, but the Dell 23″ is vastly superior and costs less money. It has more than twice the contrast ratio, plus it has DVI, VGA, and analog video inputs. I’d get that.

Review I saw actually measured the contrast ratio and found them to be practically identical. In marketing terms, there are lies, damned lies, and contrast ratios. That said, I’m told the Dell is excellent, but it does not have twice the contrast of the Apple. It’s mainly better because a) it’s cheaper and b) has more connection options.

…and it apparently lacks the ‘pink’ tones that the 23″ Apple displays in the white areas.

It might be that my 23″ is broken, but I don’t get any pink tones in the white:-) I’m finding that the new 23″ through the HDLink looks better than my old style 23″ off the mac, with brighter, purer colours.

the pink could also be an improper temp setting or bad cable no?

we’ve got a G3 with RGB cables to a 20″ monitor in one of
the audio suites and once in awhile we get strange colors
because one of the connectors is goin south.

DVI is a digital connection, so that kind of thing couldn’t happen on a Cinema Display.

    Graeme:

Great to hear that your 23″ CD is working well for you. I’ve read numerous complaints about the ‘pink’ problem with the new 23’s on the Apple display forums, as well as elsewhere. Also, to my eye, all the 23 CDs that I’ve seen on display at various Mac stores seem to exhibit this trait — whereas the 20″ and 30″ models do not. It’s especially clear when you see them side-by-side.

It’s enough to get me thinking about the Dell 24″ — which also has component ins and can be driven by the KONA 2 component outputs.

    Best, JIM.

I’ve got the old and new 23″ sitting next to each other, and they both look great, although the video image though the HDLink looks better than video through the computer. I’m not seeing any nasties like pink.

I guess the key difference going in via the HDLink is you get to do all manner of gamma / levels adjustments for calibration purposes, which you might not get going in over component.

    Hey Graeme:

Do you do the gamma/level adjustments on the HDLink or on the new 23 CD? Apparently, there are the usual host of adjustments on the Dell monitor as well, although I don’t know whether they apply to going in over component. I would think that because this is an analog solution, that they would apply. There was some brief mention of this on the HDforIndies site.

The biggest concern I have with the Dell, is that I’m not sure whether I can get my hands on one and see it working before purchasing. Gotta call Dell and see if they have retailers in Toronto that carry the display.

    Best, JIM.
