The files will not play anywhere. A recommendation/suggestion for software that would repair would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

January 21, 2017 at 2:00 pm in reply to: Change MXF recording on Sony PXW X70?

The X70 uses the XAVC-L codec. (I don’t believe FCP 7 can deal w/ these)

I’m using PP cc 2015.4. Go to the Media Browser inside PP and locate the drive w/ the file you want (it’s usually in a folder “Private”) and import. There will be a bunch of files that will be discarded in the process, but you be left with (if memory serves me well) a folder (XDROOT) in your project. You’ll find your editable clips in that folder.

    Good Luck,

January 21, 2017 at 1:39 pm in reply to: EX1R and FS7 – how to match?

I too am shooting w/ the FS5 & X70 ( I also have the EX1R, and have had to match it w/ the X70). I have tended to set the PP to default along w/ the preset color balance, then match skin tones in Lumitri . That usually gets into a very small ballpark, and I can tweak it into a reasonable match. So much depends on how the cameras are being used. W/ the EX1R & the X70, the EX1R was a wide shot of the entire stage w/ the X70 as MCU of a presenter which was relatively easy to match. W/ the FS5 & X70, I’m typically shooting the same interviewee at different angles. So, I find if I crop in on skin and match parade & vector (with other minor tweaks) it’s acceptable. But this is definitely a work in progress.

I did take Jensen’s course on the FS 5 and sent him a question regarding matching FS5 & X70. He responded that he didn’t have access the the X70 so couldn’t help.

I’d love to get some additional input on this subject. For me, shooting w/ multiple cameras is become the norm, and establishing best practices would be most helpful.

    Good luck,
    Jim

Perhaps a work around might be to use a product like ScreenFlow and do a screen capture of the multicam screen. I believe the latest version allows you to select segments of the screen for capture.
    Just a thought.
    Good Luck,

For HD possibly, but very questionable for 2K & 4K. I would really be looking for more VRAM (4GB) and at least Thunderbolt 2 (if not 3) for throughput to a RAID external drive. I’ve also been looking for a PC laptop that would handle 2K & 4K. Below is a link to B&H that has some of the choices that I’ve been viewing.

That HP Z book really looks like a winner. This may be were I shift from MAC to PC. I was curious though; since you’ve been using Macs, and your drives are more than likely formatted w/ Mac OS (Journaled), how are you going to access your files on a PC — Paragon software?

    Thanks,

The iZotope RX plug-in also provide very good noise reduction.

August 14, 2016 at 12:32 pm in reply to: Exporting .srt sidecar file? (Or workaround)

I can confirm that Adobe claims to output srt:
“You can also export closed caption data to an open caption file (SRT file format):” but I could not find a way to do it either.
I also saw some scc converters, but they seemed to be PC based. I’ll keep looking, and if I find something will report back.

Admittedly, I am just starting to play w/ captioning an am most curious as to why you need srt? I believe Youtube and seemingly may other systems will take (mux) a scc file. How do you plan to use the srt?

    Thanks,
    Jim

August 2, 2016 at 2:45 pm in reply to: Sony PXW-X70 Version 3 Firmware Update available.

I figured it out (for me anyway)!

The instructions seem to indicate that the screen on the X70 will turn off:

Note: When the camera is connected to the computer, the LCD screen of the camera turns off. Please proceed to the next step. If the LCD screen of the camera dose not turn off, please try the following methods.
    – Disconnect the USB cable and connect it again.
    – If the computer has multiple USB terminals, try with the other terminals.

Mine camera just kept the Mass Storage do not unplug prompt. What I ultimately did was to press the NEXT button, then the screen turned off and the “follow instruction on the computer” prompt appeared on the X70 screen. Then the RUN button ran the upgrade.

Given the warning that the camera could be bricked if the instructions were not followed to the letter, I wanted to follow to the letter.

Anyway, hopefully the above scenario will eliminate others anxiety.

    Cheers,
    Jim
