If you are on a budget then check the Edirol line.

The poster is using both cameras. Resolving a codec is just the start of the issue. Getting them to match up lookwise is another matter entirely. The article gives good examples of both cameras in a variety of settings and should provide good insight as to what to expect in post production.

It would only really be of value for going out of the Kona dual link to the Sr Deck for mastering. I’m not sure why Sony bundles it with the 900 except that they figure you can still use the SRW-5000 for HD capture then master back out to Sr. at 10 bit 444.

The broadcaster may have re-digitized or ripped your dvd for play out and so they may be responsible for the poor quality. You should alway use a broadcast monitor if you are going to broadcast. Your computer has way more color than the PAL or NTSC colorspace is capable of. What may look great on your computer monitor may look terrible when broadcast. A scope is a great idea too if you can afford it.

What is your final output? HDCAM? The highest quality is HDCAM Sr. The SRW-5000 is the one that Sony bundles with the F900. $84,000 for the deck plus another 10k if you want dual link recording for mastering. I’m not sure if the f500 is available anymore for purchase if you are looking to buy. If it’s a rental situation then it should be easy to find. Most broadcasters are not using HDCAM Sr. as far as I know just regular old HDCAM. Sony makes a nice half rack field deck that packs alot of power into a small form factor. It’s the HDWS280. • If your mixer is capable of pulling a luma or chroma key then you can use a scan converter to convert VGA signals to say S-video. Your Mac will come with a DVI to VGA converter cable. You can then use something like Powerpoint or Keynote to produce slides for your stills or even embed video. Churches do this quite a bit for a budget way of doing graphics. Anything that gets dispayed on your screen will be passed through the VGA port. If you put all of your text and effects over say green then your mixer should be able to pull a key from it. You’ll most likely eat up one an extra port on your mixer but it should work. You will most likely have some jaggy edges too. The MACbook uses express card 34 which doesn’t have a whole lot of support yet but it’s coming.

Canon recommends the Sony HVR-M10u as the deck to use with their HDV camera. There is the new HVR-M15U due out soon which is going to be less expensive because it has no LCD screen. Both the Canon XL-H1 and the Sony HVR-M10u are native 1080i. JVC seems to be using the 720p format. You should call a VAR to discuss your needs and get your workflow in order.

B&H is a VAR for AJA, Blackmagic and AVID and many others. We both sell the equipment alone for those who are skilled at configuring their own systems and we sell Turnkey systems for those who want support from us.
