I am currently in the process of upgrading my production suite. I currently have a Canon XL-1 and will be purchasing a Canon XL-H1. I will be editing with Final Cut 5 on a 2.5 Quad Core Mac (I am switching to Mac after years with PC).

Anyway, I am still trying to determine if I need a capture card and if so what brand and model. I want something that will allow me to get the most out of both cameras. I want to be able to edit in the highest quality while staying in real time. I was reading the AJA white paper about HD-V and it only briefly mentioned the Canon XL-H1. Does any one have info for this camera? I am currently considering Blackmagic and AJA, but I am open for suggestions.

Also, I am considering a VTR such as the JVC BR-HD50U. Are there any cheaper VTRs that will work with the H1? This whole HD-V and SDI has me confused…reading the AJA whitepaper leads me to think it might be best to capture in SDI. Is the JVC BR-HD50U the best VTR to use with the H1 and will it work with the XL1.

I guess what I’m trying to figure out is whats the best Hardware (Capture card and VTR)to get HD-V footage into Final Cut?

Finally, this may be a really stupid question but can I edit footage in real-time from the XL-1 and the XL-H1 in the same project?

Canon recommends the Sony HVR-M10u as the deck to use with their HDV camera. There is the new HVR-M15U due out soon which is going to be less expensive because it has no LCD screen. Both the Canon XL-H1 and the Sony HVR-M10u are native 1080i. JVC seems to be using the 720p format. You should call a VAR to discuss your needs and get your workflow in order.
