Excellent post! I should have thought of that… it will do exactly as Ken wants.

More RAM might make a difference, but JUST FOR KICKS… trash your Waveform cache file. You’ll find it where you’ve set it to be saved in your Scratch Disk Settings window… It will rebuild that way. Maybe it’s corrupted? I have 2.5 gigs RAM on my dual 2 gig… worked all day with those waveforms in timeline on, albeit only 4 tracks on about a 40 minute show and didn’t have any rebuilding going on… FCP 5 though.

Audio waveforms once built, should be pretty fast in their creation from then on. There is a file written to the waveforms cache that will access faster than the first build anyway.

I’d think that more RAM might help in this area, and a faster display card might also build these faster…

As far as the other problem (sounds like chromatic aberration like digital stills using cameras with so so lenses with DSLR’s). I’ve not had to contend with this in video (but there are fixes for stills in photoshop if the camera shoots a RAW photo), so not sure of the solution for video… hope someone else chimes in here…

VCD’s can be created from Toast I thought… don’t have the software though.. but think this is something they do.

However, I’d look at a dual layer burner. the Future will be HD DVD’s before ya know it…

Not really. you can move the cursor a frame or 10 frames at a time, but you can’t hear audio doing this (other than a single frame scrub if scrubbing is turned on). The arrow keys move 1 or with the option key pressed, 10 frames. Might turn on the waveforms in the timeline, and maybe that will help with the edit point… opt+cmd+w toggles them on and off. They work best if you enlarge the track width in the audio track. But FCP doesn’t have the feature of playing more than one frame in a scrub like other systems do. You can play at half speed though, if you hold down the k key with the j or L key, might help too.

It’s been around for a long time… like since FCP 3. But it also works to look at unrendered effects as fast as your computer can render the frames… like even over the dreaded red clips.

Nope. More likely you need to rebuild your startup disk…

Could be one of many things I think. A bad cable, a bad port, or even the FW bus could need resetting inside the Mac that doesn’t seem to want to mount the drive. Might try resetting the PMU switch on your G4. It’s a button found on the motherboard usually near the battery. You need to be disconnected from power altogether to reset this. Just open the enclosure, and push the button, wait a few seconds and all power management inside the mac gets reset. I’ve seen this do wonders for FW ports.
