I’d suggest a clean install. Erase your startup disk, and install OS et all from the ground up.

You should always keep media files on dedicated media drives. The faster the better, and keep all apps on that startup disk. In FCP 7, the project files should also be kept on the startup disk.

Render times are totally dependent on what you’re rendering. If it’s an fx plug class filter it will use the GPU. If it’s not that, then it uses the CPU. Not much use of the drives at all.

Apps load about 3 times faster here on an SSD, and the MBP will boot in about 15-20 seconds after the chime. Large project files in FCP 7 open a lot faster if they’re kept on that SSD. Any disk intensive task is about 3 times faster, but CPU, GPU tasks are dependent on just how fast your graphics card is or your CPU.

Change the still image duration preference in the User Preferences to be the length of whatever you’d like a new text file to be…

It’s amazing the render time difference between X and FCP 7. Even on a fast machine X smokes 7… background rendering isn’t all the story either don’t think. I believe it actually renders about twice as fast.

That said, you’re plan looks like it will get you through even though the render times are painful.

You have me confused. When you do anything in the motion tab excluding a speed change, the speed of the clip changes and it’s duration changes too?

Maybe you should post a step by step explanation of what you are seeing.

I’m finding just the opposite with an SSD in a 17″ MBP.

Hang in there, and thanks for the test results!

24 layers of video isn’t going render faster in much of any codec… LOL… Motion is likely not a ton faster, but maybe…

Render time depends on what filters/compositing we’re talking about using which codec. I see it doesn’t matter much with file size when it comes to ProRes. Thanks for that info. But I don’t think that any other codec will render faster than ProRes most likely…

The animation likely will look the same in any flavor of ProRes other than Proxy… so turn those into ProRes 422 or even try LT (might look just fine actually). But judge it externally for sure. The only thing that HQ improves is fast action shots, where the camera is moving a lot or the subject is. Otherwise it’s just a larger file. LT is broadcast quality video BTW… That would speed things up a lot if you can use it, but even going to ProRes 4:2:2 would speed things up. Animations are usually easier to compress because they don’t have all that much detail in them typically.

What codec does the nanoflash use? Doesn’t FCP’s log and transfer tool see these separate clips as spanned clips?
