If it’s been a long time since you rebuilt your startup disk, it’s likely time to do so… you’re not set up improperly, so figure you’ve an install that needs a refresh. If it’s system wide, and not on any given project or set of media files it’s probably a software install needing a renewal. Should be done any time you upgrade an OS or upgrade from one version of FCP to the next.
Try trashing your preference files for FCP first, but don’t think that will really make a difference here.

What do you mean by “grouping” the clips? Put them in a nest? or?

What is the sequence setting and source footage formats?
What are you using as a scratch disk, and how is it formatted?

Sounds to me like about 20% into your sequence, you have some media files that are corrupt. Re build this area and give it another go. If the media file is really corrupt, you need to rebuild it by exporting it as a self contained movie file using the same codec as before, but turn on recompress all frames… but I’ll bet that’s the problem.

Chances are you can reformat that drive you have to be a Mac drive.
Open the dive utility app in the utilities folder in your apps folder. Reformat that drive to be Mac OS Extended.

If you add a second display to your setup, you could use it as a full screen monitor, however the color won’t be really accurate (the boxes take care of this problem)… reason is the gamma’s that result on a TV set or projector aren’t the same as those on a computer display.
HD comes in many flavors. If you use HDV or ProRes, you’ll have enough computer. 2TB of storage isn’t a lot of storage, but likely just enough for short projects.

My students worked a lot in HDV pre AVCHD…. I’ve never worked much with it otherwise, but tapeless cameras sure make all of this easier.

AJA and Matrox both make thunderbolt adapter boxes for the real deal here… you’ll spend about $1000-1500 for a proper setup.

There is no setting to change… might try trashing prefs?
Or capture the first clip, then batch it again with the others… when it rewinds, stop the capture.
