You’ve got a bad installation it sounds like, and the only reliable fix is to start over… sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if you’re computer’s hardware is OK otherwise, I’d think it’s a install gone wrong. This isn’t a “bug” or we’d all see it.
But before you go through all that, post the exact model of the Mac, how much RAM is installed, and what you’re using as a scratch disk as well as any cards you have installed in it if it’s a tower.
Which OS and Versions of FCP and QuickTime you’re running.

Your problem is likely that FCP doesn’t support editing h.264 files natively, which is what you did… even rendering them to ProRes isn’t the way to get them there. You need to transcode the source files to prores first, then edit them in a prores sequence.

Those are the two best sites for this. But render times will be somewhat faster on the newer machines no doubt, however until we get a 64 bit, Cocoa based version of FCP, it’s not going to be all that dramatic… problem is that FCP 7 is carbonized software and not OS X native at all. FCP was written on OS 8 for starters… then “carbonized” to run in OS X. It cannot take advantage of all those cores, and tech in OS X that would dramatically speed up rendering… it’s time for a new version of Studio that is OS X native code and 64 bit… figure the next release will be such a beast. I too have a 4 year old intel tower and have no plans to buy a new machine until the next gen software is released as I feel it will be night and day render/times, and those 12 core monster Macs will actually get a workout with it.

It sounds like a bad FW bus on the machine that won’t work… the cable works on other machines, and the camera does too… leaves the FW bus on the errant machine then. It’s likely not a software problem, if the settings are correct for the source material…
You can remove advanced pulldown during capture, or you can do it afterwards too, so you could capture on any working machine and move the media to the errant one and work.

You’ve tried a different firewire cable, and you’re not connecting the firewire cable through a drive – it’s connected directly to the mac, right?

What is the exact model of the Mac? There is a procedure for the PMU or later macs had another way to reset the power management… Did you find an article on the procedure? If so post it. This procedure will reset the power management to the FW bus, which I’ve seen fix the condition you describe.

Sounds to me like you need to perform a clean install. Back up your hard drive first as this will erase it. Perform an erase and install of the OS you’re running, update it all the way, then install studio over that and update it all the way.
