You’ll need a deck that has a RS 422 serial connection. Plus your FCP system also needs a video card with a RS 422 serial connection. I am not sure that firewire supports insert edits or timecode generation back to tape.

Ken- OK, its not the tape. You need to connect it directly to a TV monitor and get a picture BEFORE you connect it to the computer. It is either a menu setting, dirty heads, or the deck needs to go in for repair.
Good luck.

Ken- Do other HDV tapes (properly recorded) play OK on that deck? If so you have record problem with the tape.
If the problem tapes play properly in the camera they were recorded on then you have a deck problem.
You need to determine if you have a ‘tape/record’ issue or a ‘deck’ issue.
I’ve seen that same problem (able to view in search mode) discussed on the HDV forum and they had some workarounds. You might want to check there.
Hope this helps,

Naomi- I agree with Rafael but would add that a video card (ie. AJA, Blackmagic) would speed up the process considerably. You could then convert WHILE digitizing into a common codec like ProRes with a common aspect ratio and framing. This could save you a LOT of time but will cost upfront money. If you have a lot of mixed format media the card will save you time AND money in the long run.

Matt- Daves correct on the edit to tape but you can definitely print to video with HDV through firewire.
If FCP isn’t seeing the deck try these steps:
First- Quit out of FCP. Turn off deck and disconnect firewire cable. Turn on deck and go to deck menu and choose HDV (not auto or DV). Turn iLink down convert to off.
Connect your firewire cable to a an independent firewire bus (no other firewire devices can be connected)>Turn on your deck.
Go to Apple icon (upper left of screen)>more info>firewire devices. Can you see your deck? Do not proceed until your computer sees the deck.
If the computer sees the deck launch FCP. Choose Easy Setup that matches your recorded format exactly.

Scott- Start with the first clean frame and go. If you need a soft transition go ahead and build it.

July 15, 2010 at 5:30 pm in reply to: HVR M25U record sequence time code through firewireAlessandro- Sometimes a TC drop/non-drop issue can cause this problem. Make sure your settings in FCP and the deck are compatible.

Amy- You must quit out of FCP BEFORE you connect the camera. Quit out of FCP>verify settings on camera are correct (HDV mode)>connect camera via firewire>Apple icon>more info>firewire. Can you see your camera? If yes launch FCP and select the proper setup for the camera. If you are still having issues you may have a firewire conflict. Disconnect all other firewire devices and proceed.

Noah- Quit out of FCP>power up the m15 deck> make sure deck output is HDV(not downconverted)>Apple icon>more info>firewire. Does the deck show up there? If not you have a deck/computer/cable issue. If it is there launch FCP and proceed with proper audio/video settings.
