  • Can I send timecode to digibeta deck from FCP?

Posted by Dave Po on November 11, 2010 at 9:35 pm

Is there any possible way to send timecode to a digibeta deck when printing to tape? I am running from FCP to an AJA IoLa via firewire and have the AJA IoLa hooked to the digibeta deck via RS-422.

no. A timecode signal does NOT go OUT of FCP.

I’m guessing from your question that you’re trying to place matching sequence TIME CODE onto a tape.
There are plenty of standard workflows that accomplish this.

Ok, that’s what I thought. Why then, when I “blank” via FCPs Edit To Tape does it give me an option of what timecode to start at? And what is the “insert timecode” button in the Edit To Tape for?

You can either BLACK AND CODE (the proper term) the tape within the deck, or via the Edit to Tape interface (the black film strip looking thing at the top). And yes, you can set the timecode. But in order for it to work within FCP, you need to set the deck to accept the incoming TC signal…is it called REFERENCE signal?…from FCP. I can’t say how to do this unless a deck is in front of me. But I have done it both ways.

Once you black the tape, just set it to REGEN and it will pickup where it detects the code.

Dave- In FCP Help search ‘Preparing Your Videotape with Black and Timecode’. You’ll need a deck that has a RS 422 serial connection. Plus your FCP system also needs a video card with a RS 422 serial connection. I am not sure that firewire supports insert edits or timecode generation back to tape.

Can you even firewire SDI? Or is he shooting out analog though an A to D?

    Sorry I’m just curious.

SDI is a protocol for uncompressed digital I/O, usuallu via BNC connectors. Firewire is a different digital protocol that includes machine control and is principally for DV and HDV type codecs.

All analog signals need to be converted to digital signals to be sent via SDI or firewire.

On the subject of timecode, my Kona 3 card does output embedded timecode (RP188) from FCP via SDI so I can use it to send picture, sound and code to my digi or HDCam tape decks.

Yes, and if I’m not wrong, the only thing you need is the: “AJA VTR Xchange Application”, that you will find here:

    Should works with your IoLA.
