Ben- Jerry has a good way to do it. But there may be a quicker way. Many of the HDV decks and cameras have a down convert menu option that converts the HDV to DV and outputs through firewire. That way all of your media will match in FCP and saves you render/conversion time. The ‘hardware’ downconversion may also be better quality.

Mare, Most of us have had to learn the hard way. I got in the habit of copying my project to a jump drive after every edit session. It only takes about 3 seconds and a few mb of space. It has saved my day more than once.

Gary- That’s great! Now if it makes sense to you, write down your successful workflow and put it into a folder. I call my folder TRICKS. Invariably I run into the same problem 3 months now and I’ve forgotten what to do. I’ll have the solution in my Tricks folder.

Gary- Ok, progress. I am going to suggest there is a mismatch between your timeline and the deck.
Close out of FCP.
Disconnect the deck from the computer.
Put the deck in DV mode (NOT HDV-DV auto mode).
Put a fresh tape into the deck and make sure the record tab is in the RECORD not SAVE position.
(If this was your problem slap your head and don’t admit it to anyone.)
Shut down the deck.
Connect the firewire and power up the deck.
Verify the computer is seeing the deck.
Launch FCP.
Verify you have an exact match between your DV settings on your timeline and the DV settings on your deck.
Go to Audio/Video settings and check DIFFERENT OUTPUT for PRINT TO VIDEO and be sure you have a match.

Gary- Couple of hints. FCP cannot be running when you connect the deck. Then be sure the Mac is seeing the deck: Apple menu>more info>firewire. Is the deck there? If not you have deck/computer communication issues. Once the Mac recognizes the deck launch FCP.
In FCP go to Audio/Video settings>A/V settings tab and check that different output for print to tape is correct.
You should be good to go.

Bert- How does the DVD play on your Mac? If it is OK there you may need to adjust things on you home theater for the DVD player. A home theater system typically needs to be adjusted for each source whether it be DVD player, CD player, VHS deck (if you still have one), or Cable Box.
I know I have tweak my amplifier settings when I change sources.
If the DVD is not playing properly on the Mac you’lI need to go back to FCP where I suspect your music is stereo and voice mono in your FCP timeline. Once your mix is right on the timeline be sure your audio settings are correct on your conversion to DVD compliant files.

Pepijn- Sounds like you might have a gamma correction issue between FCP and quicktime. Launch FCP, go the help menu and search gamma. Also check Vimeo’s suggestions on gamma.
