FCP 5.1 Print to Video with Sony GV-HD700 Deck
I am loosing my mind – Have had this problem once before – but I fixed it – can’t get it this time !!!
I can not get “Print to Video” to work –
I know this is Operator Error – just not sure what I did
here are the basics –
FCP –
V. 5.4.1 – (I know its an old version but have never had an issue with print to tape before)Deck –
Sony GV-HD700Deck Settings –
HDV/DV SEL: DV
DV Rec Mode : SP
Component: 1080i/480i
i.Link Conv: On
TV Type: 16:9
A/V DV Out: OffFCP Settings
My Final Cut settings are:
Easy Setup
Format: NTSC
Use: DV-NTSC FireWire
Audio/Video Settings
Summary Tab:
Sequence Preset: DV NTSC 48 kHz
Capture Preset: DV NTSC 48 kHz
Device Control Preset: FireWire NTSC Basic
Video Playback: Apple FireWire NTSC (720×480)Sequence Presets Tab:
DV NTSC 48 kHzCapture Presets Tab:
DV NTSC 48 kHzDevice Control Presets Tab:
Firewire NTSC
A/V Devices Tab:
Video Apple Firewire NTSC (720×480)I have refreshed AV Devices after setting my pre-sets
I have made all adjustments to the deck while it was unplugged from the firewire –
I’m at a loss – any help would be great

Gary- Couple of hints. FCP cannot be running when you connect the deck. Then be sure the Mac is seeing the deck: Apple menu>more info>firewire. Is the deck there? If not you have deck/computer communication issues. Once the Mac recognizes the deck launch FCP.
In FCP go to Audio/Video settings>A/V settings tab and check that different output for print to tape is correct.
You should be good to go.

Thanks so much for reaching out to me –
The Mac is seeing the device –And it recognizes it for log and capture –
But when I go to Print to Video – it’s just not showing up
Have messed with the A/V tab settings – but still nothing –
Is the deck suppose to show up as an option under the output for print to tape if it is …its not

Gary- Ok, progress. I am going to suggest there is a mismatch between your timeline and the deck.
Close out of FCP.
Disconnect the deck from the computer.
Put the deck in DV mode (NOT HDV-DV auto mode).
Put a fresh tape into the deck and make sure the record tab is in the RECORD not SAVE position.
(If this was your problem slap your head and don’t admit it to anyone.)
Shut down the deck.
Connect the firewire and power up the deck.
Verify the computer is seeing the deck.
Launch FCP.
Verify you have an exact match between your DV settings on your timeline and the DV settings on your deck.
Go to Audio/Video settings and check DIFFERENT OUTPUT for PRINT TO VIDEO and be sure you have a match.

I got it !
I tried everything you sent me (nope it wasn’t the tab on the tape…but it could have been )
Ultimately – I set -up a new sequence – copied the footage over – and Bingo – everything worked
So thank-you for all your help and focusing on the areas that you did –

Gary- That’s great! Now if it makes sense to you, write down your successful workflow and put it into a folder. I call my folder TRICKS. Invariably I run into the same problem 3 months now and I’ve forgotten what to do. I’ll have the solution in my Tricks folder.

Andres- Did you try the above workflow with no success? Be more specific on your problem. What deck? What is the issue?
