Chris- I purchased a Sony GV-HD700 about 8 months ago and it has performed beyond my expectations. For $1,000+ it is the cheapest deck out there… but it works. Sony markets it as a consumer deck at their Style website. Here is the link: https://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665192187

If you need a full-on pro deck with responsive machine control and SDI this is not the deck for you. If you have been using your camera for digitizing and playback then this could be the deck you are looking for. This is a Sony product so you’ll need to do the homework if you have a Canon or JVC camera. It has a great 7″ LCD for field recording and viewing. Works great as an iLink (firewire) HDV and DV dub deck.

And probably one of it’s best features is the HDMI out. I’ve been shooting HDV for three years and with this deck I can show clients an HD version of their show on their 50″ plasma and avoid the Apple/Sony Blu-ray war.

Braden- Knowing your deck model would be helpful. I presume you digitized your HDV directly from this same deck. I would focus on your decks settings… make sure ilink downconvert is set to ‘OFF’. Sometimes I’ve had to quit out of FCP and restart with the deck on.

  • Christopher- If you are in DV mode your solution is probably in the 700’s menu which also has to be in DV mode. Make sure FCP is seeing the deck by going into ‘log and capture.’

Ceri- Try closing out of FCP and go the Apple menu (apple icon in upper left corner) and select ‘more info’. Does the deck show up there? It may be a firewire conflict with other firewire devices. Don’t proceed to FCP until your computer sees the deck.

Stu- I apologize for the denial comment. I just couldn’t see how the multiple auto-save backups (each with a different name) would not be available somewhere on your system.

As mentioned previously project files should never be on media drives. Project files are relatively small and the best place for them are on the system drive. Then when you are done editing for the day try to remember to back-up your project files on a jump drive. I know this is after the fact and painful. I am glad that you got the show done and it is better than ever.

Stu- What about the next most recent version of the CORRECT project from autosave? Whatever timeframe you had set in your preferences the project you want will be there. Launch it and re-do the things that you did after the last good auto-save and get on with it. Get out of denial and fix it!

July 29, 2008 at 8:12 pm in reply to: Sony HVR-M25U Deck and FCP

Jeff- On your first issue with the time code you need to use the correct machine control… there are a bunch of them. HDV Sony firewire is the one to start with. Sometimes you need to change the timecode from drop to non-drop in Audio Video Settings before you are able to acquire stable machine control. Once you have stable machine control for that deck make an Easy Setup.

On the ‘conforming’ issue…. welcome to HDV. HDV is mpeg2 and not interframe so you are dealing with GOP frame structure. Sony and Apple worked together on the editing software so you can edit HDV native in FCP but then it has to conform back to the GOP structure before going back out to HDV tape. Nice time to go have a cup of coffee. The conform rarely takes as long as the the meter is suggesting but still is a pain.

Jay- You are not broken… your in HDV hell!

Your first and maybe your only problem may be-

[Jay Curlee] “re setting the deck to down convert”

The deck should not be in down convert. You want HD coming out of the deck if you are going to use the DVCPro HD codec. Use Mr. Zelin’s instructions and quit out of FCP and work in your Kona Control panel until you get everything working. Then go to FCP and choose the correct Easy Setup.

Ross- Does your computer see the camera; apple menu>about this Mac>more info>firewire? Many times you have to quit out of FCP then relaunch (along with Jerry’s suggestions). Also remove any other firewire devices that are on the same bus.
