You didn’t do anything wrong. Previous versions of windows media player (I think Vista can play them?) can not play DVD’s natively. However, they should be able to download VLC and play it using that piece of software just fine. Your Nero Showtime player should play it just fine as well.
Note: if they are going to be playing it on a computer, you may want to make sure your footage is deinterlaced, especially if they are going to watch this on an LCD hooked up to a computer.

Ultimate S Pro can make that a snap. It is an extension for Vegas and has a free 15 day trial from Vasst.com. I think that Excalibur from Jetdv (Edward Troxel) can do this as well but I don’t have a copy of that particular extension for Vegas.
Since you were wondering what other people do (me), here is what I do: With Ultimate S you simply point the extension (under the photo montage tab) to the folder where your pictures are and tell it what you want it to do with the pictures (pan? If so, how much and what direction. zoom? If so, how much and in or out?) There are a bunch more options as well.

That can happen as the ground lead in the firewire cords are the same length as the others so by plugging up your camera when your system is on and your camera is on (or off) you could short out your firewire connection.
This isn’t something they tell you, but it is something that people find out the hard way. I hope your cam has warranty.
If not, you can always buy a cheap consumer grade HDV cam and use it specifically for capture if the cost of repair is greater than the cost of a new cheap cam.

If the audio is already encoded as stereo (the vocals are not separate from the background music) then you can go into the EQ (on the left under the link icon on the track header) and boost the mid-tones and lower the highs and lows and see what that gets you. You will have to play around with it to get something that is workable; plus it all depends on your source audio. You can also duplicate the track with the event and utilize the notch filters to boost the levels on the mids and completely cut out the lows and highs on the one track- that may or may not sound good depending on what your track is composed of.

Thought equity motion is a company that provides stock footage that Sony has partnered with to provide another avenue for stock footage to its Vegas users and special deals may be offered on occasion (I believe there was a deal when you first upgraded to pro8 that allowed you to download some footage for free).

If your buddy is accessible you may want to run the dvd’s over to him and see if he can open them on his mac in Final Cut. It may be that the files are corrupt- just to close off that suspicion, take them back to the source.
If they are good on his system see if he will convert them to another format for you. Too bad you don’t have the original files any longer.

I would urge you to watch your page file usage in the task manager (ctrl+alt+del) and see if it pegs out at around 40%. If so, you are using up all of your memory. If you have large pictures in your project (a lot of megapixels) shrink them down to a size that is equal to your project (if you are doing a lot of zooms and panning you will want to make the picture just a little bigger than the maximum you zoom in (so it doesn’t pixelate).
Do you have any idea what could go wrong and can you suggest an automated way to render the 3 regions in such a clever way so I don’t have to wait for one render to finish in order to start another?
Thanks in advanceUltimate S (www.vasst.com) is a collection of scripts that allows for you to do back to back renders as well as a bunch of other things that would normally take you a lot of time to do, but faster . Excalibur may do this as well but I am unsure.

The Picasa slide show is done in Flash I believe and the titles are text below the pictures in the actual album. You can copy and paste the items to a text document and you may be able to find a script that will allow for the text to be placed at each new event such as with comma delimited files (check the sony creative software script forum).
Outside of that, you can copy and paste them into a text generated media (one for each event on the timeline).

I don’t necessarily know all the technical aspects to the Draft, Good, Best settings but I can tell you this: If there is a lot of movement, use Best. If you are doing a talking heads shot without much movement, Good will be just fine (and quicker for the render).
The settings under advanced allow for you to tweak the results under the Draft, Preview, Good, Best options. Think of it as layers with the options under the advanced tab as dependent upon which of the 4 options you select. They do not overide, but are the starting point.

Why are you encoding to AVI? DVDA can take mpg-2 files as well as M2T files. There should be no need for an AVI file, just use one of the DVDA widescreen templates and do the audio with the AC3 template, drop the finished encode into DVDA and then there is no need for a seperate render in DVDA as it is already compliant and there’s your finished DVD.
