What do you do? What features do you utilize most? What do you feel 8 is lacking?
We can’t really recommend you upgrade unless we know what you do with the program. If you use it for simply copying a video from your camera to and then burning that to DVD, then you would really have no reason to upgrade. If you are working on a documentary that involves multiple tracks of video and several tracks of audio and pictures, then we might recommend you upgrade to the pro version.

Possibly depending on your preference. You could do a dual boot system. Here is a link on it. I am sure you can find step by step instructions simply by doing a search for it if you want to do it that way and if you have the room to run both.

DVDA is looking for a mpeg-2 video stream and an AC3 audio stream. You will need to render (File/Render As) your file before bringing it into DVDA.

I am not familiar with the consumer version of Vegas so my recommendation may not even be valid.
Have you tried changing the keyframes to linear and setting the smoothness to 0?
Also, is it just the wmv file? If so, what are your render/encode spec’s? What is your project spec’s? If your fps is different then this may introduce some jerkiness. Also, you may want to change it from interlaced to progressive if it is not already.

I don’t know what version you are using, but in Vegas 6? (7 for sure) they introduced nested veg’s. Just go to the explorer in Vegas and drag your veg project file to the timeline. There you go. 🙂

I haven’t used the consumer version, so I don’t know what it is capable of (although there is a thirty day trial available 🙂 ). Here is a feature set for it.
As for another program for authoring DVD’s, yes there are several. However, I would recommend you get a license transfer from another DVDA user (for instance you could buy 4.0, or 4.5 if they are not using them). You cannot upgrade from it- that is the only limitation.
Another option would be Nero, but I would recommend giving the consumer version a go or sell your copy of Vegas pro8 and bite the bullet. I think the copy you have is from Tigerdirect.com or BHPhotovideo.com where they have their own offering of the product. I don’t know how they get to separate the product, but they do.

My issue is at what stage do i add compression and change my frame size so i have different size videos for the user.
If you have the disk space and procoder can handle uncompressed, then allowing procoder to make the size/compression adjustments may be best. However, you can probably use an M2T file made in Vegas(if HD is your final output, keep it 1920×1080)and be just fine and that will cut down on HDD space usage.Should i render an uncompressed video and then use a compresser to reduce my file size?
You can render to uncompressed, but it may not be worth your time and allocated space when an M2T file or Cineform AVI file will do just fine. But yes, I would let procoder do the compression and frame size reduction if you are going lower than HD resolution-wise. If that is the case, you can probably render out to SD and work with that file instead of HD. Do a comparison (A short 5 second/10 sec. clip of an area with a lot of movement and see what the difference is (if any) in your results.Should i render a compressed video and then compress again with another compressor?

Do you own Flash? If not, what converter are you going to use?
For my uploads to the web, I use DivX. I render out to M2T for high definition files and then open up Dr. DivX (a free tool) and drag the M2T file (with audio encoded with it) into Dr. DivX. From here I have a lot of control over the file size and quality.
Once the encode is complete, I then go to http://www.blip.tv and upload my source file (the DivX file) and it will do a transcode to Flash for me. It is not the highest quality flash file but still good. What I like about blip.tv is that it lets you link back to your source file for embeds so you can give your viewer an option of flash or whatever your source file was.
