Hi Josh,

I don’t have any Canon video cameras, however I do have several Sony’s. They allow for downconverting straight from the camera so that way the footage you are getting through capture is already standard definition. You may want to check your camera and see if it has that option as well.

I also don’t have any of the consumer versions of Vegas so this may or may not be true, but under Avi, see if there are any options for Cineform or intermediary. This is an avi intermediary file that is easier on the editing machine but takes up more space on the hard drive.

And again, this may not work as the consumer version may not support scripting, but you could go to http://www.vasst.com and download gearshift. It will allow you to make proxy files for editing (easy on the computer) and then replace those files with the high definition version right before rendering so you get the optimal quality for your output.

You can name a preset, save it, and have it show up including multiple collections. And yes, collections will not show up in the presets and visa versa unless you name it the exact same.

Take a look here and see if you can find it. I believe it is attached to the registry: C :\ Program Files \ Sony \ Vegas Pro 8.0 \ Presets

There should be some folders in there (with as many presets as you have).

If you can’t find it, make one really quick and name it something original and then do a search for it.

And, USB is not what you should be using for video transfers. Does it have a firewire port? If so, use that.

If you do not see the collections folder, then just create it. Make sure you are under the right user name. Once you create it, you should be able to go into collections and custom under protype and see your presets there.

You will need to turn on “show hidden files and folders”. Go to any folder menu bar and select Tools/Folder Options/View and then select it- it will be a radial.

Can you give us the imported files spec’s as well as the spec’s once it is on the timeline and then tell us how you are rendering the file?

If I am not mistaken, you are limited in what you can do with the consumer version of Vegas when it comes to customizing output settings. I could be wrong on this as I do not own the consumer version. Maybe I need to obtain a copy so I can better answer these sorts of questions 🙂

That’s something completely different. Any of the Vegas products will edit standard definition digital video. However the basic Vegas (the one in the yellow-orangish box) will not edit AVCHD as far as I could tell by reading the description (I only have the pro version but the others showed AVCHD as an option in the spec’s list).

I would recommend you purchase AVCHD Upshift to convert your AVC files to a file type that is better suited for editing. You can find that converter here.

Then you could go with any of the Sony Vegas products (except the one in the yellow-orangish box as I don’t think it supports AVCHD. Pick the one that suites your needs for what you want to do. If you tell us a little bit more about what you want to do with these videos you are making, we can make a better suggestion.

Can you give us some details on your project settings, your source files (file type), and your render settings that you are using for output to mpeg?
