  • Hi Michael,

Go to the bottom of this link and you can download the AJA Windows quicktime codecs. Works like a charm.

The “two drives” that are out are made by Quantum. One is a SDLT drive and it has been out for a while and the other is an LTO-3 drive and it’s supposed to ship next month. I saw a demo of the SDLT drive a couple of months ago and it is a very interesting solution. You can plug the drive directly into a network, via Gigabit Ethernet, and it can be seen and accessed by any PC or Mac on the network. Transfer rates are much faster then traditional DLT drives. The SDLT version has speeds up to 288 Mb/sec. and the LTO-3 version up to 544 Mb/sec. It is also MXF aware, so if you are working with MXF media, it is possible to grab only part of a file by timecode, instead of having to take an entire clip. We were going to get the SDLT version, but are now probably going to hold out for the LTO-3 version. Here are two links on each one respectively.

P.S. – I do not work for Quantum or one of their resellers, I’ve just been doing a lot of research for the last six months into viable long term archiving solutions for pro video.

Oliver is correct, we’ve done this going FCP into MCA. It’s just like other QT codecs.

[Victor Klaus] “I’m going to edit DVCAM downconverterd from HDCAM”

How are you doing this? Are you going to be working off of DVCAM dubs from the original tapes or do you want to digitize to DV from the original tapes? If so, what kind of capture card do you have?

    Hi Victor,

Could you give us some more specifics, especially your FCP setup. What kind of mac, what type of storage, capture card etc. There are many different ways to do this, depending on your tools. For example if you want to work uncompressed, you need a fast raid. If you are talking about working DVCPRO HD, it’s different. For example, depending on the frame rate, an hour of uncompressed HD can be between 400-500 gigs, where as an hour of DVCPRO HD is only a small fraction of that. Do you need to go back to an HDCAM tape when you are done, do you want to project in HD or is your project just going onto a DVD? If you could give us a little more info, then we can better advise you as to how to move forward.

April 29, 2007 at 10:03 am in reply to: Tri-level sync and Kona LH/3

    Hey Chrispy,

I’m not sure what kind of issues you’d have with not using a tri-level sync, being that I’ve never tried on our Kona 3 without one. I would guess that you could have all kinds of drift and sync issues, especially in an offline/online workflow, but I’m sure that Bob Z. can chime in hear with a whole slew of possible issues. I know that when I’ve tried to do it on our Avid without one, we couldn’t even digitize 24p footage, the capture tool would shut down right away. However, this should not be nearly as difficult of a problem to deal with anymore, come June, since AJA will be delivering the new GEN10 (tri-level sync for under $400).

In regards to the 1080/50i or 25p project, yes a PAL black burst reference will work just fine. I hope this helps.

It ships with 10 client seats of Final Cut Server, it is not FCP, it is an entirely different program that helps you manage your assets as well as many other things. It works with FCP, but FCP does not need to be installed in order to use Final Cut Server. Keep in mind, this program is cross-platform, it works on Mac and PC. You can export a FCP project from it, but it’s not FCP. If you want to get a rough idea of what it can do, go to

    https://www.proximitygroup.com/page.php?pg=products_artbox

This is the software that Final Cut Server is based on, what apple has done in terms of changing and updating this program, since they bought it, no one really knows. We’ll just have to wait until they release more info about it.

    “but it ain’t cheap.”

The JL Cooper and Tangent panels are not cheap either, however one is quite a bit more expensive then the other, but is supposed to be an outstanding panel.

“anybody know anything about this, or can confirm or deny?”

    Andy,

I know that apple had systems set up with control surfaces at NAB, but I don’t know if the were JL Cooper or Tangent panels. Both of these companies make panels that work with Color. There is mention of it on the bottom right hand side of this page.
