I’m a film student–getting ready to cut my final/portfolio film.

    Shot On: Sony HDW-F900
    Tape: HDCAM / 50 Minutes (23.98p / 1080)

This is my first time using HDCAM. My only previous HD experience was on DVPRO50 HD @ 720p. Any helpful suggestions, tips, or resources would be great.

Not only for capturing (although, for this post, ESPECIALLY)…but for work-flow and editing in general. What should I keep in mind?

And approx how many gigs make up about an hour of the HD files on a hard drive?

And, can I even capture my footage into FCP directly or do I need some other program(s) as well??…

    Hi Victor,

Could you give us some more specifics, especially your FCP setup. What kind of mac, what type of storage, capture card etc. There are many different ways to do this, depending on your tools. For example if you want to work uncompressed, you need a fast raid. If you are talking about working DVCPRO HD, it’s different. For example, depending on the frame rate, an hour of uncompressed HD can be between 400-500 gigs, where as an hour of DVCPRO HD is only a small fraction of that. Do you need to go back to an HDCAM tape when you are done, do you want to project in HD or is your project just going onto a DVD? If you could give us a little more info, then we can better advise you as to how to move forward.

    best regards,
    jeremy

I’m going to edit DVCAM downconverterd from HDCAM on Mac G5 2.66 2gigs of ram…. maybe some on an apple powerbook laptop as well.

We are not going out to HDCAM, I believe, we are going back online in full HD and then using that file for DVD that can be played anywhere (but that will still have full HD capabilities on HDTV big screens and etc ….

[Victor Klaus] “I’m going to edit DVCAM downconverterd from HDCAM”

How are you doing this? Are you going to be working off of DVCAM dubs from the original tapes or do you want to digitize to DV from the original tapes? If so, what kind of capture card do you have?

HDCAM to DVCAM transfer…. then capturing for free on schools DVCAM Decks…. converting to 23.98 in cinema tools… then editing offline til picture is locked… then using EDL and original HDCAM tapes to go back out to HD.
