Ultimately I reinstalled AE and I haven’t had a problem since. Not the answer most people want to hear, but at least it did the trick.

I have to second Zane here. While it is possible to edit from the system drive, it isn’t desirable at all. Better to get something like a little LaCie Rugged drive that you can cart around more or less fearlessly. (But back up often!)
Now when push comes to shove, you CAN get away with SOME cutting on a local drive, even a 5400 RPM, especially if you’re really only handling compressed SD. I’d frankly go with that option – less heat in the laptop – to save some money for external storage at 7200 RPM with FW800 ports (I also recommend getting drives with multiple ports – I’ve had the FW port die on me and my stuff get trapped inside on the perfectly good drive itself. Get something with options – again, the LaCies come with FW 400, 800, and USB 2.0.) But whenever you DO cut on the local drive, go immediately to your firewires and move everything you’ve done over to them. Your machine will live longer and run more smoothly, absolutely.

Thanks all for weighing in. I kept fiddling with the figures and going through the tutorials and manuals again and again, until I came to the conclusion that my main problem was trying to slow down excessively fast motion too much. When I pushed the vectors up, I could see the plugin working all liquidy in there (apologies to S Palin), but there wasn’t any real image info to be had. I still got this kind of pulsing action – the motion moves forward, and stops, and moves forward and stops – but write this off to an optical illusion based on lack of pixel information where Twixtor is ‘tweening’.
I do still have one question, though – my footage is undeniably 30 fps, progressive, DV/NTSC; for whateer reason, I like the results Twixtor gives me in super-slo mo when I set its frame rate input to 15 fps. Why would that be? Is it my imagination, or does that smooth out the super-slo mo a little more?

If you check the system requirements of any of those plug ins, I would bet they will tell you they require os 9 or os x – and if you’ve got one and not the other, there’s really not much more you can do but pay for upgrades. But stay tuned, someone around here might have something else to say about it…

Simple question, but it needs to be asked – you are not ‘exporting’ via the File menu, right? Of course you should be going out through the Make Movie option in the Composition menu-

Very helpful, thanks. Especially good idea to look at the Light Streaks tutes. I had convined myself what I wanted was the Write On effect, but in fact a particle emitter with zero velocity was a much more flexible tool.
