  • [Christopher Morrison] “When you say “keeping the length to 100%” is that a setting (if so, I’m having trouble finding it). Or do you just mean to not alter the length in the Compressor timeline/window display? “

Yes. It’s a setting. Click the ‘General’ tab in the inspector and check out the retiming section. See here:

[Christopher Morrison] “Also, just for fun and if I can’t make the first option work, did not follow the second option: “running a frame to frame conversion”.
    “

The other option to take the 24.0 fps and “rewrite” the at 23.976 fps. This will literally retime the movie and make it longer (thus screwing up the sync, which is essentially you are doing in FCPX by retiming the 24 to 23.98). This is also done in the retiming section here:

What you want is to keep the movie at the length it is now, set the frame rate to 23.976, and keep audio sync.

  • Do you have the audio stems separately?

    If not, no matter.

Run the video through compressor keeping the length at 100% and change the frame rate to 23.976.

Import the video, lay in the audio from the original file and that should do it.

Another method would be to run the original file 24@23.98 (meaning a frame to frame conversion), but that will slow down the entire movie and then you’d have to remix the audio to this new timing. This option is obviously not ideal.

  • [Ronald Lindeboom] “I would offer one suggestion: we would like it to remain positionally where it has stood in the past — in the As, Apple in particular. Why? Because in the Ns it will draw far less attention.”

    “An NLE Debate Forum”

  • Apple Talk is a great name for a forum.

But, I am not sure if it is the right name for this forum. NLE Debates would be more appropriate, I think. It takes the focus off of Apple for new COW users, and leaves FCPX Techniques for tech answers, questions, and help.

I know that Tim Wilson liked this forum in the early days because it was “full contact”, meaning people can come here, and respectfully disagree, share insights, and most importantly learn about other ways of completing the same tasks with different hardware and software.

I think Apple Talk would shift that spirit, even if it is a great name. Unfortunately, I am old enough to understand the double entendre! ☺

Maybe we should change it to the Apple Extensions Manager? ???? I’m kidding, of course.

  • [Sara Blom] “The problem is that I can’t reflag the clip because this function seems in-actieve when I open the tab.”

This needs to be done in the inspector (command-4). I would change the clips inside the Multicam (that means open the angle editor and do it there, as well as the mutliclip itself, if that it possible). You have to do this on the individual clips.

  • You might have to clear the font cache using the Terminal.

A google search will tell you how to do so.

    Awesome.

    Thanks for this!

  • [Michael Angelo] “The proxy swap for a QT 444 @ 960×540 worked, less than elegant and makes collaboration with remote editors a little funky but it’s a great short term work around thank you!”

You don’t have to change the resolution if you don’t want to. you can just keep the native resolution.

I usually copy (option-drag) the files from my normal directory to the proxy directory. This will cut down on media duplication.

If you are trying to save file size, then yes, a 960×540 444 movie will work too.

  • [Michael Angelo] “Jeremy so when you say you have to “matte it” I’m assuming you mean exporting a separate foreground and matte as 2 clips from After Effects then doing this:
    “

Essentially, yes. It’s a huge PIA.

Have you tried replacing the generated proxy clip with the full res render yet?

This works too, you just have to remember to do it.

Wherever your proxy media is stored, you can replace the FCPX generated proxy clip with the full res 4444 clip.

  • [Robert Olding] “I’m not sure what you’re attempting to do with your file but wouldn’t a file with an Alpha channel typically be place in an FCPX project as a connected or compound clip that is above the timeline (above what you want to see through it)?
    “

Working in Proxy mode of FCPX gets rid of alpha channels. This is the issue Michael is facing. There is a trick where you can replace the Proxy media in the Proxy folder with the full res movie, and it will work, but it’s a pain.

Apple should add an alpha to the ProRes Proxy codec and this issue would go away.
