This is definitely not as elegant as Media 100’s online/offline. You have to make sure that you have made the sequence clips independent before media managing.

October 10, 2005 at 10:31 pm in reply to: FCP audio limiter for whole sequence?

You can use the audio mixer and turn down the master volume to whatever you want. As far as filters for entire tracks, believe it or not FCP does not have it.

You can also nest all of your audio tracks into two tracks (stereo) and adjust the volume or add filters to the whole set that way.

If you are planning on upgrading your media 100 to the latest SD version, i would get a used dual g4 and call it done, unless you are planning on upgrading to Media100 HD. A shop that I work for has upgraded to M100 HD and although the hardware acceleration is sweet, the software is wrought with weirdness. Good ideas, bad implementations. It feels like it’s just not quite done and I’m working with a Beta. COnstant crashes and weird behaviors. At the time support was pretty bad as Optibase was looking for a way out. Maybe Boris’s support will be better, but who knows. Plus, you have to pay extra for it.

I don’t want to discourage you from upgrading your Media 100 and a G5, but unless you are going to Media HD I feel that it’s not worth it. Also, Media 100 HD requires top of the line RAID hardware and FCP is a little more scalable. Forget 720/24p at all with Media 100 HD, but that’s probably not important to you anyway. MEdia 100 upscales everything to 1080i so you need a big and fast array. You can get away with a LOT less drive speed in FCP.

The FCP/Kona2 is a good route to go. Aja’s products work very well, and their support is great and happens to also be free (just don’t expect 24/7 service). If you need analog in and out I would suggest with new Kona LH (analog/digital ins and outs SD and HD), or add on an io LA to your Kona2.

Also, even if you could put a Kona 2 and M100 board in one machine, it would leave no room for storage connection (such as a fibre channel or SATA card).

Working, cropping, and rendering as you go definitely helps if you need to make a quick master, but waiting until the end to render really isn’t all that bad either.

Also, I take it you are doing this because it’s being shown raster to raster? If it’s not being shown raster to raster then there’s really no reason to crop. If you are making a dvd and it’s being shown on a computer (i.e. raster to raster) you can crop out a few lines in compressor to get rid of the tc noise at the top and/or bottom of the screen. Since you are encoding anyway, a crop won’t add much to the process.

I’ve been really happy with tiger and fcp5 for months now on two machines, but i have one more thing to add. An easy way to do it is to get a new internal drive and do the install on to that. Start completely fresh with tiger & updates, then fcp5 & updates. This way you will have two separate systems on two separate drives. You can always revert back to your earlier os and version of fcp if you are having trouble by selecting the start up disk in sys perfernces and restarting. Also, it’s a good way to ensure that you don’t lose any data, as you can take your time and drag projects and other important stuff from your panther drive to your tiger drive. When you are sure you have everything you need from the old system drive you can then use it for backup and storage.

You can export a reference from FCP. Select your sequence, go to export quicktime movie, and make sure the little box that says make movie self contained at the bottom of the resulting dialog screen is NOT checked. You can then bring that movie in AE.

Could be. Are they balanced 1/4″ cables (TRS) or unbalanced? Is the patch panel balanced or unbalanced? Without knowing exactly what you have and how it’s hooked up, it’s hard to tell. it sounds to me like a bad connection in the patch panel somewhere. Have you tried using different ports?

Yeah, I’m not so sure, but i can sure try and help. I’d add in each piece of equipment one at a time and see when the signal starts to break down. Since the patch panel is a pass through, I’d add that in first, then see if you’re still getting a good signal. After that, add the eurorack. Make sure all of your cables are good, and switch channels on the eurorack if the first two aren’t working. Make sure there’s nothing soloed or muted and that you’re going into the line ins (not mic) of the eurorack. Are you getting proper levels to other pieces of equipment?

If you bypass all extra equipment & plug the io straight into your 1800, is the signal still low? If the signal is good, you have something messed up in the chain between the io & the 1800. Make sure the front level gains on your 1800 are set to about “6” or 2 o clock.

What codec is it exactly? If it’s the AIC, I think that codec might come with iMovie HD. You can also spend the money and upgrade to FCP5 and you’ll be good to go. 1080i50 is a PAL standard. I don’t know where you live, but be prepared to edit on a pal timeline with pal monitors.
